Starcraft II Dated!

The lovely and talented Tiny Dancer already filled you in on the details regarding the standard and collector's edition of StarCraft II, but there was one detail missing from his article a release date. Well, Blizzard has finally announced that the RTS sequel StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty will be arriving in stores on July 27. That's stores in the US, Canada, Europe, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Mexico, Singapore Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. So I think most everybody's covered there... sucks to be a hardcore gamer living in the Arctic!
"We've been looking forward to revisiting the StarCraft universe for many years, and we're excited that the time for that is almost here," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "Thanks to our beta testers, we're making great progress on the final stages of development, and we'll be ready to welcome players all over the world to StarCraft II and the new Battle.net(R) in just a few months."
Oddly, the press release also mentions that you'll be able to purchase StarCraft II directly from Blizzard Entertainment "shortly after the retail launch." Um, why wouldn't you be able to buy it to download at the same time? Why give preferential treatment to gamers willing to schlep down to a store to pick up a disc in a box?

Preferential treatment isn't being given to gamers, it's being given to retail outlets who rely heavily on pre-ordered boxes.
Yeah it's likely a retailer thing. Same reason why Sony is hesitant to let PSP games release immediately, or why Xbox waits a few months before it puts games up on the Marketplace.
Surprisingly, there are people who still venture out into the world to purchase things.
Terrific work! This is the type of information that should be shared around the web. Shame on the search engines for not positioning this post higher!
What a great resource!
