Contra Ups The Difficulty With Hard Corps: Uprising

hardcorps_uprising.jpg
If the secret to history is learning from one's mistakes, the secret to profit is revisiting one's successes. It seems Konami has clued in on this concept, since their latest breakout hit comes courtesy of 1994, with a renaming/retelling in the Contra franchise known as Hard Corps: Uprising, which is looking to release this winter for XBLA and PSN.

In general, Contra is not a name that promises many surprises. If you play a game with a Contra pedigree, you can expect to spend some time in crazy themed environments fighting giant mutated creatures and enemy soldiers of various descriptions and levels of hideousness. There will be at least one level where you're riding a missile/snowboard/jetski while the normal shooter controls apply. And, if it's anything like my beloved Contra: Shattered Soldier, the last level will be made entirely of unreal boss fights.

Now that the nostalgia's kicking in, it's back to what we know for sure: Hard Corps: Uprising is another run-and-gun shooter in true arcade fashion. Even though "Contra" doesn't appear in the title, the game clearly shares the same universe, and the main character is actually an antagonist from 1994's Genesis hit, Contra: Hard Corps. Players will control Colonel Bahamut and one other character in some on- or offline co-op, though there may be additional characters later on. The game shows off a more flashy, anime-inspired art style, possibly due to the Arc System Works developer name in the mix. As current screenshots show, the action looks to keep traditional weapons and enemy types intact with a dearth of explosions and a distinct Metal Slug feel.

This marks at least the third or fourth classic game Konami has seen fit to reboot lately - among them Sparkster and Rush'n'Attack. Logic and timing would point to the massive success of Capcom's new Street Fighter and Mega Man games as inspiration for this new move to tap into their past to mine for gold there.

Besides these remakes and the upcoming Castlevania, are there any other games you'd like to see remade in glorious HD? Let us know in the comments!

I'd love to see a brand new HD 2.5D Ecco the Dolphin III game for XBLA. Combine the dark story and epic soundtrack with beautiful and sometimes haunting visuals and you've got a winner in my opinion.

Also a new Streets of Rage might be good. I think SEGA should follow Capcom's example and tap in to their dead franchises for HD gold on XBLA and PSN.

If you don't mind off-brand games, you should definitely check out Burning Fists of Rage on Xbox Live Indie Games. It's quite similar to Streets of Rage. Unfortunately, can't help you with an Ecco-like game, but there's also a great Vectorman take-off coming soon called A.R.E.S.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
