E3 '10: Telltale Games

Creeeeeeeepy gnome!

Telltale Games had a meeting room at the back of one of E3's halls, so it was hard to figure out what they would be showing me at first. While I waited, however, I spied a pink Mattel hoverboard, with which I took my picture.

When I was ushered into their space, however, I found that the games we were to be shown were their soon to release Puzzle Agent and the third episode of Sam & Max Season 3.

Puzzle Agent seems a new step for the primarily adventure game focused company--touted as an abstract puzzler more in the line of Professor Layton. The art is what you see above, cartoons by Graham Annable, and lends itself to the environment and feel of the game. You play as Nelson Tethers, the only agent in the U.S. Department of Puzzle Research, investigating the shut down of the Scoggins Eraser Company in Minnesota.

This also sees the first time Telltale will be using their Pilot Program, which allows them to determine how much of a market will be available for the game. The pilot should launch this month, though perhaps not on all the planned platforms right away, which include: PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, and WiiWare. It sounded as if WiiWare might be the last platform on which it releases.

The third episode of Sam & Max in this season, titled They Stole Max's Brain, is going to a more film noir and detective style. Max is out of commission, and Sam gets more gruff, removing both his jacket and hat, and instantly growing out a bit of stubble. The focus of the game is interrogation, using different methods to extract information: threatening, calling someone a liar, and the noir option, for example.

The last part of the QA session involved a few questions about the recently acquired Jurassic Park and Back to the Future licenses. They did not seem willing or able to give too much information, but we were assured Jurassic Park would, for instance, focus less on adventure game aspects and be more tuned in to tension. They also stated they would primarily be using the films as canon, and perhaps a few of the other materials out there.

I love TTG and what they did with Sam and Max. Though, I have to honestly wonder what the hell are they going to do with Jurassic Park?
