Video: DJ Hero 2 Announcement Comes With Beatboxing & Freestyling
It may have been a gimme, and we may have already heard about it from certain sources, and it may fit perfectly with the publisher's habit of pumping out game sequels... but it's still exciting to see the first fully-produced media regarding the holiday release of DJ Hero 2, if for no other reason than it gives us an opportunity to jam to Lady GaGa's "Just Dance" mashed up with Deadmau5' "Ghosts 'n' Stuff." This is a pretty nice mix, and the video above uses it to show off this sequel's biggest addition: microphone support.
Alongside two co-op turntablists, the tunic-clad singer sings to GaGa's remixed voice admirably, but it does lead one to wonder: who actually performs over a track after it's had cuts and breaks and beats applied? Much of the skill in DJing is in juggling a vocal track such that it can't easily be replicated by an actual singer. Even the trailer above uses some awkward camera cuts when the singer's voice should be skipping along the record. Microphones in this genre are much better suited to beatboxing and pre-recording than they are for on-the-fly redubbing while the DJ's hands are still on the virtual vinyl. Still, if the notation for pauses and breaks is solid enough, it may achieve that fine goal of not being an annoying singing experience.
Deadmau5, the recent US house-producing legend, will be a playable character in the game in addition to a contributor (he's the one wearing the giant creepy mouse head near the end of the trailer--you can't miss him). And whether you're a fan of him or of Lady GaGa, you'll want to jump on the DJ Hero marketplace before next Monday, as the mix featured in this trailer is a free download until then to celebrate this announcement. So get going!

Quick comment about the last paragraph: deadmau5 is a Canadian artist based out of Toronto, so it should be changed to 'deadmau5, the recent Canadian house-producing legend,...'

The scene where he rolls behind the live newscast is totally hilarious. Wish I lived in the UK so I could have had a chance of seeing that news show live.
