Video: Pokemon Black/White Getting Three-vs-Three Battles; Begs For 3D

If you're feeling fatigue from all the Pokémon Black/White news, maybe something in this official trailer will get you excited again. Dawdle posted a clip yesterday showing the titles' release date as September 18 for Japan, which means that shows like Pokémon Sunday have their work cut out for them in building hype and releasing new details to the public.

The last video we saw had a brief cutscene showing off a green-haired chap - as it turns out, this was a teaser to the official trailer above. As expected, there are new interfaces and online modes--and, yes, plenty of new elemental-variations-on-cute-animals. About 20 seconds in you'll see a real game-changer, though: three-Pokémon team battles. Aside from simply making the battles more complex with moves that hit one foe or many, this promises to add an extra layer of strategy to the usual rock-paper-scissors of choosing Pokémon.

The other obvious improvement seen in this and many other videos for Pokémon Black/White are the new camera angles: wide, sweeping views of a city, high pans over a bridge's arches, and even the zooming during battles. Most of what this new game does, graphically, puts just one question in mind: wouldn't this look great on the 3DS?

Sure, it would - but Pokémon releases in September, whereas the Nintendo 3DS isn't expected to be available in Japan until this holiday at the earliest. So what gives? There were dozens of incredible-looking games on Nintendo's next handheld shown at E3, which means devkits have been around for months at least - and that's surely enough time to at least work on a 3D version of the next bestselling Pocket Monster battler.

My guess is that the version that's out in September (and, as Dawdle pointed out, likely next spring for us) will be forwards-compatible, widening the screen and adding some 3D for those who play it on a 3DS system, which won't prohibit those gamers from playing it who don't want to upgrade. The other possibility is that Game Freak is putting out the flat version this September, then working on a 3D remake for exactly a year after. This would mean extra bank for both them and Nintendo, but unless they overhauled the graphics completely to match some of the Gamecube-level visuals we saw at E3, it would be a bit of a ripoff for fans of Pokémon.

Of course, most of this is just speculation, but it's hard to look at some of the scenes in these videos and not imagine them a lot better in 3D. Or is it just me?

Yeah, it would look awesome on the 3DS, except for the Pokemon. Because they're 2D sprites, they'd be flat. But I wouldn't put it past Nintendo to release a 3D version of this game NEXT holiday season, because that would give them time enough to turn all the graphics polygonal and sell everyone the same game all over again!

Seeing as there is always a third "director's cut" version (aka we-want-more-money-from-pokemon-addicts), I think that you're on to something with the year-later release.

Yep, the 3DS will definitely come in Japan around the time of these games [and enhance them abit].

Though I still think Nintendo missed a killing in sales by not making these two of the 3DS' launch titles in the first place [i.e. actual 3DS-only titles], to be honest.

I disagree fiercely with the notion Black/White should be 3DS games at launch, for the simple fact that a profitability point of view, that would ostracize the players who have DS-Classic, Lite and DSi (like myself) who might not get 3DS so soon if at all (even if that would be retarded).

I'll admit that I myself will be getting a 3DS on Day One, but I cannot see Nintendo leaving their most important franchise for portable gaming out of the hands of their other iterations and thus other players' hands who maybe can't afford to buy a whole new system just yet. The NEXT Pokemons (maybe Infrared and Ultraviolet, hehe) and whatever remakes they do next will surely be on 3DS, but Black and White are far too soon. That would be met with GREAT resentment with the likely "complaint" that Nintendo is trying to make us upgrade just to continue playing. Blizzard and Starcraft II level of resentment.

The 3rd "Special Edition" game however could be on 3DS as that wouldn't be as soon and that would do as suggested and that would get people on board.
