Best Buy Firing IPhone Vs HTC Evo Video Creator

Last week, you may have seen the video of two adorable robot-voiced dogs discussing the merits of the iPhone 4 vs. the HTC Evo. Well, one dog discussed, the other just really, really wanted an iPhone. If you missed it, watch it after the break. You may have laughed, you may have rolled your eyes, but I don't think anyone except the truly deranged took it seriously. As it turns out, at least one of those possibly deranged folks worked fairly high up at the Best Buy corporation, and once they found out the creator of the video, Brian Maupin, sold phones for the company in Kansas City, MO, they started calling for his figurative head. Currently Maupin is suspended from his job, and has been told he will "most likely" be terminated.
Of course, nothing about the video says, "Best Buy." The only reason anyone will now associate it with the company now is because of Best Buy's own actions. While legally they may have the right, it seems rather short-sighted at best, bone-headed at worst to NOT expect some negative fallout from it.
Maupin doesn't seem too bothered by his impending unemployment. Perhaps feeling a little bolstered by the publicity and the over 2 million views the unassuming video has gotten, he told Tech Crunch:
I see it all as a blessing in disguise. I've wanted to start my career in graphic design/animation for so long, I see this as my kick in the pants to go get it.
Best of luck to Brian, but let's hope that animation career consists of a little more than a couple of Xtra Normal text-to-movies. Like I said, if you haven't seen the video, check it out after the break, as well as a report from his local NBC affiliate about the story.
Best Buy Trying To Fire Employee Over Those Hilarious EVO Versus iPhone Videos [Tech Crunch]

So, he made a fun film, slightly poking fun at the phones. Nothing linked the videos to Best Buy. Neither Apple nor HTC have complained.
Therefore, he has NOT brought the store's name into disrepute, which would be the normal reason why the company would be able to sack him.
That means if they DO sack him, he can look forward to a nice payout from any legal action he takes. I really think Best Buy need to consider their next steps carefully...
I worked in retail, the vid is exaggerated yes, but also very very true....
Hell I had one guest who came to me looking for a product I knew we were out of, she was not satisfied so she asked 4 other people, who all came to me because I was the department lead and expert and I gave them all the same answer. She would stand in the background watching to see if I said anything different.
Some people are just to suborn or stupid to understand how things work especially in retail, hell people don't even understand retailers do not produce products they only sell them. People would ask when we would be "making more".
This kid was venting his frustrations, if his bosses can't see the parody in the vid then they never understood the guest and the associates to begin with.
Good luck with a new career buddy.
i think the flaw in the whole thing is that Brian is actually mocking the customers and not really anything else. if you follow his link, you can watch the seems to favor the iphone instead.
@Stone K
You do make a good point here- a good amount of this video does indeed seem to be about venting his frustrations over stubborn, stupid customers.
But there is also another interpretation that can be made that I'm not sure was his intention: how the worker can be both biased and harbor unreasonable distaste for a specific product and it's user base. Yes the customer was an idiot- a fairly poignant interpretation of an un-informed consumer driven by a logo and not the actual product- but the worker seemed equally flawed in his views of said product. Simply in the opposite direction.
Nearly every single point he brought up (before they started simply getting silly) that favored the HTC over the new iPhone was either outright wrong or simply hyper-exxagerated. Is the iPhone 4 the visionary god-product that is worlds ahead of it's competition that Apple likes to claim it is? Hell no. But every single professional out there who has looked into tech specs and performance have shown that it is equally strong, if not better, than anything else on the market currently (give and take a few specs).
The biggest criticisms of it are that while it is really one of the best on the market NOW, by the time Apple creates the next update (in a year or so) the Android market will have released five new iterations that will leave the iPhone 4 in the dust. An argument that can easily be countered with the simple fact that once you have your new phone you tend to not NEED or WANT an upgrade for a couple years (because of the way cell phone contracts work).
And people who take the same stance as he seems to in this video (yes, it's a silly little video-joke, but it shows his opinion on the subject very clearly) also don't take into account other factors in this debate. I love Android phones as much as the iPhone. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. That being said I would be a similar kind of customer to that idiot in the video. I would only take an iPhone and would calmly shoot down all attempts to make me adopt an Android. Why? Not because it's an iPhone- it's because I have already invested a lot of time and money into the apps I've purchased for my iPhone. Apps that won't transfer to the Android. So in order to continue enjoying those products I need to continue using iPhones. If I hated my experience with the iPhone this would be a different matter entirely, but so far I've had mostly good experiences with it. And as someone who is used to this kind of thing (can't transfer my DS games to a PSP after all!) it doesn't really bother me.
Watching this video, for me, was watching the worst of both worlds. An uninformed, obsessed-with-label, brainwashed customer who is unwilling to listen when you say "we're out of stock" and the I-Know-Everything, Condescending, Biased employee who hates his job and wants to take it out on you.
Comedy Gold!
(PS: Best Buy is insanely stupid to fire this kid over this- it doesn't look like they have a legal foot to stand on)
