Deus Ex: The Book

I'm a huge fan of Deus Ex, to the point where I also enjoyed the oft-criticized sequel, Deus Ex: Invisible War a great deal. So it's with some interest and slight wariness that I report that Del Rey is going to be publishing a novel based on the videogame series by James Swallow entitled Deus Ex: The Icarus Effect.
Set in the dystopian Deus Ex universe, The Icarus Effect will feature Secret Service agent Anna Kelso and special-ops soldier Ben Saxon getting a little bit too close to the usual shadowy conspiracy. Author Swallow has penned novels and scripts for franchises like Doctor Who, Stargate, Warhammer 40,000 and Star Trek, so he knows how to treat established worlds. And he's also worked on videogames themselves, including Star Trek Invasion, Maelstrom and Killzone 2, so that's helpful.
"We're really pleased to be able to announce this new DEUS EX novel with Del Rey books," said Andre Vu, Marketing Game Manager, Deus Ex. "The novel is set in the DEUS EX universe and there will be characters and story elements in it, that will overlap with our next videogame DEUS EX: HUMAN REVOLUTION, which we hope fans will be very excited about."
Since the whole appeal of the game was the freedom of choice to play however you wanted, it'll be interesting to see if a linear novel will hold any appeal. On the other hand, the Mass Effect novel was pretty good, so who knows? Deus Ex: The Icarus Effect is scheduled to release in North America and Europe in 2011 as well as many other countries around the world.
