Patapon 3 Demo Moves To Your Beat Today

patapon3.jpg
If asked for a list of the most unique and interesting titles for the Sony PSP, I'd be hard pressed not to put Patapon at the top. For being on a mainly 3D platform, the series offers some gorgeous stylized visuals using 2D sprites and a very simple, contrasting palette. Even the art style looks mundane next to the gameplay, however: a sort of RPG/RTS game wherein your tribe of one-eyed minutemen are controlled by timed button presses - effectively making Patapon the most dangerous rhythm game out there. Unless your Rock Band buddies tend to lose control of their drumsticks, I mean.

But enough gushing about the PSP's best tribal war sim. As to why this is relevant today, it's because the latest iteration has a demo available on the PSN Store today, and you can be playing it as soon as your PSP gets on the network. Patapon 3 continues the fine tradition of using war drums to tell your Patapon to attack, defend, or maneuver, but also adds some new features to the mix. The headliner of all these is infrastructure connectivity--yes, Virginia, there is an Internet. Sony's Xmas-in-July means you can play co-op or versus against strangers so you can, at last, prove whose rhythm is stronger.

Most interestingly, the addition of Superhero Patapon look to give the battles a more epic feel with fewer Patapon being scattered after enemy attacks. Add in legendary weapons and items to go along with those huge masks, and it looks like Patapon 3 will be the latest to allow a sort of Monster Hunter feel to its co-op challenges. The versus mode looks similar, but with 4-on-4 action.

If this sounds up your alley, then you'll want to check out the Patapon 3 demo by logging into the PSN Store from your favorite Patapon-playing device. And if you catch the Fever, the only cure is to enjoy this demo until the game proper comes out in September.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
