Sony Says Next Next-Gen Starts Without Them

It might be a few years off, but the big three are always looking towards the future to see what unique experiences they can bring players with their next round of consoles. We've heard rumors of the WiiHD since early 2008, Microsoft has made it no secret that they've got something new in the works, but what about Sony? After taking a market share nose-dive with the extremely powerful PS3, how is Sony looking toward the future? Pretty cautiously by the sound of it.

In an interview for Develop with Sony's Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida, the man in charge of internal development predicted that we'd see both Nintendo's and Mircosoft's next console products available before we'd see anything close to the PlayStation 4 hit store shelves. In the same interview Yoshida also predicts that Nintendo will be first to move into the next round of hardware since the Wii "doesn't even support HD resolution." Yeah, I made a funny face when I read that too.

Personally, my totally uneducated guess is that we'll see a repeat of this generation with Microsoft shipping first, with Nintendo and Sony releasing not too far apart from each other in the same year. HD resolution or not, Nintendo's hand isn't being forced at the moment so I'm hard pressed to say that they'll release something first. What do you think? Who's going to ring in the next "next-gen?"

I still think each of them will have a new console out by 2012 [to capture - and for them, hopefully cultivate - as much of the '3D' buzz as possible].

No one just likes to admit they'll be first [or that their console was essentially a commercial failure, ala Sega and the Dreamcast, and now Sony and the PS3].

Just like school boys really.

I predict that the current cycle might have another five years left on it. There's not that much that gamers want that the current consoles cannot do. Higher definition? 3-D?

I think Microsoft will begin talking and showing off things 2-3 years before they can ship. They will probably tout their upcoming system and make a lot of large promises with what it will be able to do.

Nintendo will probably keep it under wraps until the year it is coming out. There will likely be a great deal of wrong speculation on the internet the closer it gets to the release date.

Sony will probably work on the basics of a system but won't finalize it or release it to the public until they know what their competitors have...then they will try to copy the best features they think they are seeing. I doubt they will release a new console unless they feel the PS3 is not competitive anymore. (All the looking down on the Wii and the DS isn't helping them though, to be honest. Resolution =\= Game Quality)

I think the 3DS is going to be amazing. I'm getting one as soon as I can. I haven't been this excited in a long time.
