Its comparisons to Dungeon Keeper were probably a given, but Kalypso Media has announced a new game: Dungeons. For those unfamiliar with the former title, you played a fiendishly wicked dungeon lord who built a lair and fought off those pesky heroes. Enter Kalypso Media's new game:
Dungeons follows the mis-adventures of the foremost of all Dungeon Lords, who spends his time luring heroes into his labyrinthine creations with the promise of treasure and a good fight -- only to be trapped by his ingenious devices. Once they are in his grasp, our Dungeon Lord must look after and cherish his new found prisoners until they are more comfortable with their surroundings, because come the "harvest", happy heroes have more precious soul energy for you to gleefully extract via foul prisons or twisted torture chambers!
There exists some meta-plot about evil girlfriends and other dungeon lords, but really, I read evil ex-girlfriend and yawned, so let us skip that bit.
Instead, let us focus on having goblin minions who must do our bidding. Or focusing our energies on the fact that we are creating a marvelous dungeon for the consumption of those foolish enough to enter. Perhaps let us narrow in on the fifteen different monsters we can have snack on the ten different types of heroes? Sounds delightful.
Of course, since those glorious days of Dungeon Keeper, it's curious to see how the concept itself has been applied in various ways. To my mind comes Overlord, Evil Genius, and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life As a Darklord. Whether or not Kalypso will just rehash the same old or bring new life to the genre remains to be seen, I suppose. I'll certainly keep an eye open for it.
Currently the release of Dungeons appears to be PC only and in Q1 of 2011.
