It's Official! Return To Silent Hill Again!

There was a trailer shown at E3 this spring, so it hasn't really been a secret, but Konami officially announced today that it was working on Silent Hill 8 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 to release in 2011. (By the way, Silent Hill 8 is a working title. Expect a suitable subtitle later on.)

"In honoring the rich history and strong following of Silent Hill, we're working hard to build a next generation horror game that the fans truly deserve," said Shinji Hirano, President of Konami Digital Entertainment Inc. "This Silent Hill introduces an all-new storyline and unique evolutions in gameplay, building on innovations and successes from over a decade of true survival horror and terror."

You will play prison inmate Murphy Pendleton, who finds himself stranded in the titular town after his prison transport runs off the road. The usual puzzles and combat with twisted monsters will ensue as he struggles to escape with his life. The press release promises " a dark, thought-provoking storyline which will appeal to fans of the early, classic Silent Hill series, as well as anyone who enjoys a deep, psychological horror experience," so I'm hoping it'll be more horror than combat. Because it was the combat to story ratio that killed Homecoming for me. I did enjoy Shattered Memories, though, so I'm hoping it's more along those lines. Oh, and they're also going to include side quests that will change depending on your play style, so it seems they'll be borrowing at least a little something from Shattered Memories...

I'm a complete Silent Hill junkie, prefering its more horror-based focus to Resident Evil's increasingly combat-heavy play. So clearly, I'm super-psyched for this. How about you? Fancy another trip to that foggy, horrific town?

I remember getting the first Silent Hill without knowing much about the budding horror genre at the time. I became so addicted I called in sick from the office the next day. I finished the game in two sittings, pined for more and then learned about the alternate endings. As far as my boss knew, I was having a hard time beating a stomach bug that year...

God yes.

.....Though I haven't truly been engaged in the series since after 4. (Which I loved, btw. Haters gonna hate.) I seriously hope SH8 goes back to the series' roots.

Haha, I'm such a wuss when it comes to horror games... I do agree with your sentiment though; more story/less combat.

I was amazed I made it through Alan Wake... And Dead Space is proving difficult. I do love these games though, I just have to watch other people play through the ones I can't stomach! :p

Well, count me in the excited camp for this game. I wonder what innovations they will add to this installment. I'm excited to see the story as the focus.

"unique evolutions in gameplay" - this scares me. Smells like they're going to invent yet more ways to kill monsters, which really wasn't what made the franchise so popular in the first place.
I guess they need to attract a new crowd of players. The ones that love whacking abominations with whatever and going 'Yeah man!' :(

"building on innovations and successes..." - another possible red flag. If they're talking about innovations like the ones in Shattered Memories then it should be ok, but if they could be speaking of linear levels (like in The Room), combat (like in Homecomming).... I don't know, let's hope they're more on along the lines of Memories.

Speculations, speculations....

Fingers crossed it all turns out to be at least half as good as SH2. Imho, that one had the best balance of puzzles VS story VS combat (not that the original SH for PSX was shabby in same regard).

Then again, I'll devour anything that has Silent Hill plastered over it :x
