Mafia 2 Producer Enjoys Being An Ass****

mf2.jpg

A Developer Pop Quiz was brought to the castle's attention by one of our loyal readers, so I hopped on over to MTV Multiplayer to check it out for myself. And sure enough, during the quiz, 2K Games Senior Producer Denby Grace comes off as kind of an ass, but then at one point, he says that the best advice he ever received was his boss telling him to "Keep being an ass****, you're good at it." And sure enough, it turns out he is pretty good at it. Just check out this innocuous question and his insane answer to it:

What do you think is the biggest problem current games suffer from?

It's a very good question and maybe a little general for a concise answer. An obsession with gay space marines.

Yeah. So there's that. Unfortunately, since it's not a proper interview, there's no follow-up question to ask him exactly what he means by that. Does he actually think gamers are obsessed with homosexual space marines? Or is he using "gay" in the more popular pejorative usage? Is he trying to be funny? No matter what, it's just offensive. Looks like somebody's a little cheesed off that their "blockbuster" Mafia 2 wasn't quite as successful as a little indie title called Halo Reach that came out recently...

I wasn't planning on buying Mafia 2, mostly because I'm over that whole sandbox crime drama genre, and also because I was more than underwhelmed when I demoed it at Pax East back in March. But now I wouldn't play it if you gave me a free copy. Why do people think talking like this is okay? What is wrong with people? I'm sorry I can't be particularly witty or insightful about this, but I've had a bad day and this just made it worse. I've got a request in to see if I can get a response from Denby regarding this issue, so we'll see if I have more to report tomorrow.

'Mafia 2' Producer Thinks The Industry Has 'An Obsession With Gay Space Marines' - Developer Pop Quiz #5 [MTV Multiplayer]

Well, to be quite fair, the space marines in, say, the Gears of War series are madly in bed with one another.

This comment is even better in light of the fact that you can do everything in Mass Effect *except* have a gay space marine.

I'd probably be more into Halo/Gears/Generic shooter if it did have gay space marines.

To be fair, not buying a game because one asshole is involved is kind of like saying you should never buy a game again.

Video games are often made by large teams of multi-facited, multi-cultural teams that may very well disagree with his comment wholeheartedly, and to condemn the entire team for one asshole's comment, just because he may be higher up, is unfair to the hardwork other people put into the game.

For example, Shadow Complex was a great game that everyone who likes that kind of game should buy, regardless of how big douche Orson Scott Card is. Similarly, I would be willing to bet all sorts of games you like were made by people who don't think gays are cool. Would this knowledge stop you from loving your favorite game, or are you happy being blind to everybody's hate and just pretending that everything is peachy?

I think he meant 'Gay space marines' more as a time saver for 'the other overly-utilized-hyper-macho-archetype-that-my-game-isn't-using' because he just comes off more bitter than homophobic to me. Does it make it okay? Well... I think your bad day is making you oversensitive to it.

We all say spiteful things when we're mad. Y'know, like calling a guy an asshole, even though he identifies as one. It's like calling a kettle black, and then the kettle gets mad about it. Or like how a gay guy gets called gay and then gets mad about it.

So... essentially, if he does mean it in the way you're taking it, you're sinking to his level and being just as bad as him by calling him an asshole.

The only thing gay here is how they failed to produce the game that they intended to.

I think he just meant to say 'lame' instead of gay, but I guess he couldn't get over his frustration since 'gay space marine' games are doing far better than his own. Blame the others instead of looking at yourself first is the easiest.

Either way, he just comes off as one of those obnoxious seen it all - know it all people who think they've been illuminated. Funny, cause if he was, I guess he'd make a bigger impact with his ideas and games.

Let him enjoy his cup full of bitter :>

I haven't bought Mafia II because it doesn't support left handed (southpaw) controls.

I recently purchased a "gay space marine" game that actually bothers to cater to left handers.

His offensive comments certainly aren't going to make me buy a copy.

He obviously wasn't referring to homosexuals. Pick your battles, queers, because getting all butthurt over this just makes you come off as whiny. You're ambushing a guy that wasn't even talking about you.

DrRush said:

@ moz

He said the word "gay" and he used it in a way that's not necessarily nice. it think its quite relevant to us.

and wtf are you doing posting on here?
homophobes aren't welcome.

Moz,

Considering the fact that this happened a couple of days ago, I can only assume that you've been breathlessly waiting to see how we'd respond to it just so you could troll us. Good job! I'm glad we mean that much to you. We'll be here when you decide to come out of the closet.

NaviFairy said:

The fact that he wasn't actually talking about homosexuals is the whole point. Maybe it's just me, but I'm not a fan of the word "gay" being used as an equal for "stupid," "lame," etc. The point is that the word shouldn't be used in that context at all, and that the people who use it that way are only displaying their own ignorance in the process. If he didn't actually mean "gay," using either the meaning of joyful or homosexual, then he should have used a word that more accurately meant what he intended.

Is it possible that he's making an oblique reference to the "gay space marine" trope that has become quite popular (on both sides of the fence) on the internet? I don't get out much these days, but I do waste an inordinate amount of time on certain anonymous image boards, and there does seem to be a oft cited discursive figure of the ubiquitous space marine that has gradually been eroticized through its partial appropriation by gay fans of Gears of War, etc. (as another poster mentioned).

"Gay space marines" as such a category seems to have precipitated out of a quasi-dialectical back-and-forth between multiple parties (pro-gay, anti-gay, indifferent, etc.), and I would posit that Grace is making reference to this index of images, rather than making a consciously derogatory comment. Certainly, he is using the term derisively, but he's not qualifying "space marines" as "gay," so to speak, but rather referencing a presumably shared notion of "gay space marines." A somewhat topical analogy would be the casual use of something like "brooding pretty-boy vampires" to refer to the Twilight series and its auxiliary and derivative phenomena. The term, despite being composed of three independent lexemes, essentially has only one referent and functions as a single semanic unit.

That doesn't mean that Grace shouldn't be held responsible for being more circumspect in his choice of words, however, since any familiarity with the term in its discursive context would be sufficient to have one realize how multivalent and thus how potentially hot the term can be (pun only partially intended).

Where are these eroticized gay space marines? If there are images, I'm interested.

Homophobia is an irrational fear of gay people.

Pejorative slangs and comments such as the ones above are ignorant but not homophobic.

People need to stop saying everything is homophobic when it's clearly not.
