Nintendownloads - 10/18/10 Netflix Edition

wii netflix channel.png

Wait, doesn't the Wii already have Neflix? Yes, if you use a disc in your system. But as of today that changes with a new Netflix Wii channel available for download from the Wii Shop. The channel is free of charge, and of course requires a Netflix subscription to actually work. I know I'll be using it a lot more now that I don't have to put a disc in every time I want to watch a movie, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

But Netflix isn't the only new addition of the Wii Shop this week. The virtual console continues to be on life support with the release of Final Fantasy Mystic Quest from the SNES. While Mystic Quest isn't usually regarded as one of the better games to carry the Final Fantasy name, it's at least encouraging that Nintendo is still courting developers like Square-Enix to release Virtual Console games. There are also two new WiiWare titles, Thruspace and Happy Holidays Halloween. Thruspace is a puzzle game that tasks you with fitting Tetris-like pieces through holes in a wall. Meanwhile, Happy Holidays Halloween is an attempt to cash-in on the upcoming holiday with an app to send Halloween-themed postcards to your Wii friends.

The DSi Shop sees four new titles this week. Snapdots is a puzzle game from Nintendo that has you shooting blocks to reveal a picture. Armada puts you in control of a military aircraft carrier to fight enemies and inclement weather to keep your carrier safe and complete your mission. Academy Tic-Tac-Toe takes place in a fantasy world where tic-tac-toe is important enough to have tournaments. And Music On: Playing Piano turns your touchscreen into a virtual piano to teach you how to play 15 songs.

Hit the jump for the full description of each of this week's games. Now if you'll excuse me, I have some Netflix to catch up on.

Beginning today, Netflix members in the United States and Canada can stream content through their Wii™ consoles with Netflix installed on their Wii Menu. The Netflix disc that was used for instant streaming on the Wii console will no longer be required. Netflix members who have a plan starting at $8.99 a month ($7.99 in Canada), a Wii console and a broadband Internet connection can now instantly watch movies and TV shows streamed directly to their TVs by simply downloading Netflix from the Wii Shop Channel. This new channel is available at no extra cost. The new disc-free option installs Netflix on the Wii Menu, making it convenient for Wii owners to quickly access streaming movies and TV shows.

Refine your skills in multiple game modes (Normal, Endless and Trick Challenge), brush up on the rules in Keydron Tutorial, or watch replay data in Keydron Memories. As the game progresses, the number of available keydrons, backgrounds, stages and levels will increase. If you have a broadband Internet connection, you can register your high scores on the leaderboard via Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection and compare scores with other ThruSpace players. I think you mean "Mystic Quest" unless SqEnix changed the name.

Oops, that would be a typo on my part. Fixed.

The PS3 also goes disk-less for Netflix today. Why is there no article on that?

Erhm, sorry, I just caught up on the articles over the past week and saw there was a PS3 related one a page back.

omg Mystic Quest? Is it bad that I want this?

I hope SE releases FF6 (or FF3 as it was once known) on Virtual Console.

Right there with you, Shawn. Had played it and enjoyed it as a wee one. However, if they release VI on the VC, I will pick that up immediately.

Yeah, Mark, for some reason Sony was pushing this already last week (likely because of 1080P and captions). The Wii announcement caught me by surprise (but I don't pay as much attention to what's available on my Wii, sadly).
