Interactive Fiction Comes To The Kindle

promo.pngThe Kindle is a great little platform. I'm more of a Nook fan myself, but I'll give credit where credit's due to Amazon's hit e-reader. Indie studio Choice of Games made note of an omission in Amazon's online offerings, the choose-your-own-adventure genre, and crafted two titles to download to the device, Choice of the Dragon and Choice of the Broadsides. Hit the jump for more info.

For those not familiar with the Choose Your Own Adventure books, they were a series of unrelated narratives with the reader as the main character, and when important plot points would occur the reader would be given choices of action to take and turn to the appropriate page to see the results of said actions. Choice of Games' books take the same approach, but take advantage of the digital format by allowing for deeper storytelling and many, many more options.

For those without Kindles or those who want to try the books out before downloading can visit Choice of Games' website for the previously mentioned titles plus an additional two as well as user-contributed titles. As an added bonus, the titles are gay-friendly. Two minutes into tinkering with Choice of the Vampire and I was already being seduced by Fernando de Villanueva e Itamaraca.

Now I know these interactive books only arguably fit the definition of being "games", but they received honorable mention for the Nuovo award during the Independent Games Festival. What's more, the titles keep track of various stats depending on the choices you make - Choice of the Vampire monitored my income, whether I was literate, my strength, agility, perception and if I was more superstitious or rational, for example - which opens up or closes off further choices as the story goes on.

So if you forgot your DS and are looking for some light interactive fun being seduced by gay vampires in an usual gaming format, swing by the site or download one of the titles for a look-see.

Heh. I've been hoping for CoG on Kindle ever since they announced Kindle Active Content. :) I've even tried writing my own, but it's harder than it looks!

The interactive fiction genre never did recover from it's market crash.
