Portal 2 Is Coming Out

portal2.jpg

In the most shocking breaking news ever, EA sent out a press release that they'd reached an agreement with Valve to distribute Portal 2. I know, right? I mean, it's only one of the most anticipated games of 2011, so what — it wasn't going to find anyone willing to distribute it? [/sarcasm]

"Portal 2 is Valve's most innovative title in the company's history and will be launched with a first-class launch campaign this April," said Doug Lombardi, vice president of marketing at Valve. "We're excited to be working with Electronic Arts to deliver this title as we expand our platform strategy to include the Mac and PlayStation 3 platforms."

That's right: April. In the only bit of useful information, it would seem Portal 2 will be released for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and Mac on April 21, 2011. At least, that was news to me. I don't recall seeing a definitive release date anywhere before. I am pleased that they're including the Mac right out of the starting gate instead of wating 3-4 years to do a port like most companies have done in the past. Although honestly, I'm a little worried whether Portal 2 can be as awesome as Portal. The first one was short and sweet, just the right length and just the right challenge. I fear that making Portal 2 longer to justify releasing it as its own full retail game might ruin it somehow. I hope they prove me wrong!

Why do they need a distributor? Why not do it themselves?
