A New Batch of Pokémon Black and White Names
Various forums and fan websites have already leaked a full list of English Pokémon names that will appear in the upcoming Pokémon Black and White games. While we can't show you the leaked list here because they have not been officially announced by Nintendo and could easily be false, what we can show you is the new names IGN recently revealed.
- Desukaan, the Coffin Pokémon - Cofagrigus
- Mogurew, the Mole Pokémon - Drilbur
- Kibago, the Tusk Pokémon - Axew
- Koromori, the Bat Pokémon - Woobat
- Minezumi, the Scout Pokémon - Patrat
- Gothiruselle, the Astral Body Pokémon - Gothitelle
- Ranculus, the Multiplying Pokémon - Reuniclus
- Wargle, the Valiant Pokémon - Braviary
- Musharna, the Drowsing Pokémon - Musharna
What do you think? I personally think Woobat has a nice ring to it. With each new generation of Pokémon games, fans have questioned the lack of creativity when localizing a Pokémon game and its characters. Despite this, people continue to buy the games and eventually get over any qualms they have with a Pokémon name after a while. Besides, it's not like you can't nickname them.

I've mentioned this before, but for the most part, the English and other international names of Pokemon, at least for the critters themselves, are almost always accurate translations or variations of their original Japanese wordplay and punnery.
The only real strong example of a really mismatched name I can think of is Mr Mine, which was Barrierd in Japan. (Which makes sense, as it specializes in barriers.) The translator himself said adding Mr would be dumb if the games ever added gender, which they did, but executive meddling forced the name anyways.
So chances are if it has a sucky name in one version, it's gonna be sucky in all of them.
Drillbur does make me giggle delightfully though.
I'll stop Poke-nerding and language-nerding now~ Promise!
Good going keep-it up.Great information. Thanks for such a great blog.
Ugh! I hate the name Woobat.
Sound far too infantile. I just hope its evolution will have a better name.
