No Xbox 360 Exclusive Mortal Kombatant?

mk.jpgGoro and Jade were the latest fighters to be revealed to be making their mark in the upcoming Mortal Kombat game gracing the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on April 26. But aside from the classic kombatants revealed so far, God of War antihero Kratos will also be making a guest appearance on the PlayStation 3 version of the game. Knowing how Mortal Kombat games just love tossing that letter K around, it makes sense they'd pick Kratos. Plus, his games are pretty gory and bloody to begin with, so it's a no-brainer to even imagine the guy pulling off a Fatality or two.

Since his reveal, Xbox 360 owners wondered whether they would also be getting an exclusive character in a similar fashion to Soul Calibur IV's Yoda and Darth Vader. Unfortunately for Xbox 360 owners, the Mortal Kombat team stated via their Twitter that "the only exclusive character is Kratos for PS3." If your console of choice is the Xbox 360, I know what you're thinking. "What a load of krap."

The same thing happened a while back with Batman: Arkham Asylum which exclusively gave PS3 owners Joker as a playable character. If you own both consoles, though, does this announcement make it easier to decide what console to get the game for? Or are guest characters really unnecessary on a major fighting game? Or could that statement simply be misinterpreted? Time will tell.

I don't think shoehorning Kratos into the PS3 version is enough to get very many people to switch or double dip. I could see the PS3 exclusive 3D mode having a bigger impact among 3D TV owners or anyone planning on getting one in the near future.

For fighting games a lot of their success and longevity depend upon being embraced by the fighting game community as tournament worthy which means anything that could fragment the player base like console exclusives or DLC characters is risky. Both MK9 and MvC3 are going to have DLC characters so it will be interesting to see how tournament organizers handle it.

Aw, and I was really looking forward to beating up Scorpion as Azurik or Blinx the Timesweeper.

It is disappointing that they would only make an exclusive character for one system and not the other.

It would have been cool to see a character like "Gears of Wars" Marcus Phenix join in on the fight for xbox.
