All of us here at the castle are excited for Nintendo's 3DS handheld (I've already started rigging death traps around my room to keep away unwanted thieves), and our dear Nugget has been speculating about the kinds of Virtual Console games he wants to see. But I noticed that he was talking about playing those Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles with 3D effects added in. Having not heard anything about the Virtual Console games being in 3D, I checked with Nintendo to see if that was something they were going to do. Their response?
"As with the Virtual Console service on Wii, all Virtual Console games for Nintendo 3DS will be in their original 2D format."
Now, that's not to say an enterprising developer couldn't make a 3D remake of a Game Boy game to sell in the Nintendo eStore, but then I guess that wouldn't technically be a Virtual Console game. Those are going to be direct ports like on the Wii. And because I don't really understand how the 3D works technically, I don't know how easy it is to add 3D effects to a 2D pixel game as opposed to one made with polygons. I assume it's like 3D movies. When it's a CGI cartoon, the computer can easily add depth. But when it's a regular movie, someone has to go in and program in the depth scene by scene. So it would probably be up to the developer whether they want to just do a quick port of the Game Boy game or actually put some effort in and make more of a remake with 3D effects. Time will tell.
