3DS Virtual Console Not Actually In 3D

3DSVirtualConsole_news.jpg

All of us here at the castle are excited for Nintendo's 3DS handheld (I've already started rigging death traps around my room to keep away unwanted thieves), and our dear Nugget has been speculating about the kinds of Virtual Console games he wants to see. But I noticed that he was talking about playing those Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles with 3D effects added in. Having not heard anything about the Virtual Console games being in 3D, I checked with Nintendo to see if that was something they were going to do. Their response?

"As with the Virtual Console service on Wii, all Virtual Console games for Nintendo 3DS will be in their original 2D format."

Now, that's not to say an enterprising developer couldn't make a 3D remake of a Game Boy game to sell in the Nintendo eStore, but then I guess that wouldn't technically be a Virtual Console game. Those are going to be direct ports like on the Wii. And because I don't really understand how the 3D works technically, I don't know how easy it is to add 3D effects to a 2D pixel game as opposed to one made with polygons. I assume it's like 3D movies. When it's a CGI cartoon, the computer can easily add depth. But when it's a regular movie, someone has to go in and program in the depth scene by scene. So it would probably be up to the developer whether they want to just do a quick port of the Game Boy game or actually put some effort in and make more of a remake with 3D effects. Time will tell.

The lack of 3D isn't the part of the quote that bothers me (though I'm a big sadface.) More, I'm bothered by "original format," meaning no way to trade or duel pokemans, link up Zelda: Oracle of X games up for the hidden dungeon, etc. Hat desperately needs to be a function.

Nintendo has done some minor tweaking on the Wii virtual console for select games (for example, the arcade version of Space Harrier has some unique control options) so I'm hoping they can find a way to trick the virtual console games on the 3DS into connecting with other games where a link cable would have originally been used. I wouldn't expect to be able to trade a Pokemon from a VC version or Red to the DS or inevitable 3DS versions, but I'd hope that a VC version of Red would at least be able to trade with a VC version of Blue.
