Act Surprised - Sega Still Milking Genesis Games In PC Gold Collection

Don't get me wrong, I love my old Sega Genesis games. After all, for me Shining Force 2 will always be the best game ever made. But come on Sega, this is just getting embarrassing. Before I get too cynical, I should probably get to the news that popped into my email this morning: Sega is announcing the SEGA Genesis Classic Collection Gold Edition for the PC. This collection will feature 46 classic Sega Genesis games for the PC. Sounds exciting, doesn't it?

Here's the thing, over a year ago Sega released Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection on Xbox 360 and PS3, which featured 40 Genesis games (48 total if you count arcade and Master System games). Since then, Sega has gradually been releasing Sega Genesis games on Steam. And do you know how many Genesis games are currently on Steam? That's right, 46, the same number as this newly announced collection (that number counts Sonic 3 & Knuckles as a single game). While the official press release didn't name all of the games that will be included, the usual suspects like Sonic, Altered Beast, Golden Axe, Columns, and Ecco are joined by more sought after titles like Shining Force, Alien Soldier, Vectorman, Toejam and Earl, and Gunstar Heroes. It's worth noting those last two titles were not available in Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for consoles. As for the rest of the list, I have a sneaking suspicion that checking Steam's currently available Genesis library will provide any more hints you need.

For some of these games, this is the fifth or sixth time they have been re-released, but in case you don't own any current consoles and have resisted Steam or any other form of digital distribution, then...well then you probably still have your Sega Genesis hooked up and can play the games on their original cartridges. This is the point in the article where I normally would say to support the retro collection so that Sega makes sequels to some of these classic games, but it seems clear they are more content to just re-release the same games over and over again. I suppose all we can really hope for at this point is that Sega moves on to making Saturn collections soon.

SEGA Genesis Classic Collection Gold Edition will release on PC March 15 for a yet unknown price.

Considering you can get a lot of their titles on STEAM already--this confuses me.

Doing a Saturn emulator and Saturn Collections would require actual effort on Sega's part.
