Cave Story 3D Coming To 3DS Retail This Summer

Cave Story has been enjoying a bit of a resurgence in popularity lately thanks to downloadable releases on WiiWare and DSiWare. And while the WiiWare version featured an updated look, it was still essentially the same 2D masterpiece we know and love. Well, for Cave Story fans hoping for something new, look no further than the newly announced Cave Story 3D coming to retail this summer on the 3DS.
At its core, Cave Story 3D is still a remake of the classic freeware game developed by Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya. But unlike the graphical improvement of the WiiWare release, which maintained a 2D pixelated look, Cave Story 3D will feature all of the classic environments reimagined in the third dimension. Normally I'm not a fan of altering the classics like this, but with the remake given Amaya's blessing and some stunning concept art, I'm willing to make an exception in this case. And while the core game is the same, there will also be new areas to explore, secrets to find, and easter eggs for long-time fans. Cave Story 3D also marks the first time the game will appear on retail shelves with NIS America as the publisher.
For me, Cave Story 3D is every bit as much of a system seller as the Ocarina of Time remake, possibly moreso since this will actually include new areas and content aside from the graphical enhancement. Cave Story 3D will release for the 3DS some time this summer.

Totally agreed! Once I heard Pixel was signing off on every enhanced music track, it was clear this would be a faithful and loving remake.
Plus, with all this new popularity, we finally got hints of a possible sequel! It's a great thing when indie devs get their due~
I've never played Cave Story, but having it portable makes it much more appealing. I'll have to keep an eye on this.
I can't believe this news! I was going to hold off on the 3DS, but I can't possibly not play this game immediately upon release!
