Facebook: Now With More Oregon Trail

Oregon Trail should be a familiar name for many gamers, especially those not fond of dying of dysentery. While it's not the classic game so many of us fondly remember, Oregon Trail has been brought to Facebook in playable form. The Washington Post has a quick blurb on it you can find here, but nothing beats checking it out yourself, so I did.

Oregon Trail follows a lot of the typical Facebook game dynamics made famous by Zynga's many -Villes, though it's an actual game with an ending. If you get things right, you actually will arrive at your destination, and competing for high scores is part of the challenge. There are even some history lessons to be had - and some American geography lessons, for this Canadian. (The only thing I knew about Oregon before playing this was that the Goonies was filmed there.) Apart from marching your group along the trail, there are minigames to amuse you, and stuff to find on the roadside. Fixing your wagon involves a Tetris-like minigame, while crossing rivers in your wagon is a fun, if rudimentary, experience. Hunting for food can be downright delightful, depending on how much you like squirrels...

I haven't played through the game enough (my computer is very sick right now), so the "social" aspect of Oregon Trail hasn't really revealed itself to me. If you want to check it out, it's free and on Facebook right now. It's a fun way to kill some time. And some settlers...

Lets just hope that our friends can still die of dysentery.
