Cave Story is coming to the 3DS this summer in Cave Story 3D. And while we don't exactly have any new info from what was already revealed last week, we do have some pretty pictures to look at and see how the remake is shaping up. Above is the first teaser trailer for Cave Story 3D, showing off the new 3D models for Quote and Balrog greeting each other against a nondescript white background. I'm rather torn on Quote's new look. On the one hand, it looks fantastic and true to the character. But on the other hand, in Quote's pixelated form it was never immediately apparent to me that Quote was a robot, so I always thought it was meant as a surprise plot point for first time players.
In addition to the teaser video, we have a gallery below with a 3D look at the game's introductory cave, concept art of some of the environments and characters, and those some areas in their original form for comparison. There have been some significant color palate changes, most noticeably in the Egg Corridor where tan has been replaced with moody lighting and metallic tones. One thing is for sure, the new concept artwork certainly highlights that Cave Story actually takes place inside a cave, with a much darker look overall (in terms of lighting, not dark as in gritty). Of course, this is just concept artwork, so it isn't necessarily what the game will look like, but rather what the team at Nicalis is aiming for in their 3D re-imagining.
What are your thoughts? Are you digging Cave Story 3D's new look, or is the whole remake an affront to your pixelated nostalgia? Check out the video and screenshots then sound off in the comments below.
