In honor of the only day of the year where we celebrate commercials by sitting through a long, boring football game to watch them (That is why we do it, right?), I thought it would be nice to take a look down Nostalgia Boulevard and look at some of the most memorable video game commercials, both good and bad.
This Super Smash Bros. commercial is actually what I used to convince my father to buy this game for me when it came out. My father was generally clueless about video games, but loved oldies music, so whenever this commercial came on, I mentioned how I hoped that song would be in the game, and I eventually found the game waiting for me one day after school. Of course, that awesome Turtles song was not on the soundtrack, but I still am reminded of SSB whenever I hear it.
This commercial for Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, on the other hand, still makes me cringe while watching it. As a gigantic fan of Final Fantasy Tactics, I had been excited about this game, annoying people who would listen while I talked about it. When the commercial came on for the first time, I remember my sister turning to me, and asking "Is that the game you've been talking about? Geek.". Someday, I will forgive Square-Enix for this commercial. Maybe.
The only thing I have to say to this commercial for Legend of Zelda is "Go Link, wikky wikky!"
Okay, so I was already playing World of Warcraft when this commercial came out, doesn't mean it isn't still one of the funniest commercials made for a video game.
This commercial gives such an epic feel to Final Fantasy 7, although it did not hint to the copious amounts of text boxes. I also know that quite a few people were disappointed when they realized that Cloud and friends actually have boxes for hands. I know I was still overjoyed in the Christmas of 97 when my brothers and I opened our big present to find a Playstation and Final Fantasy 7 (And Pandemonium, which is still a fun, underrated game)
It is obvious in hindsight that Nintendo has been planning the Wii for some time now. While it may be slightly more fun to play Punch-Out! on the Wii rather that with the Power Glove, nobody can deny that, for the 90s, that kid was playing with power!
This commercial for Final Fantasy X-2 was my first serious introduction to J-Pop. I'm hoping that someday, with enough therapy, I will be able to get over this. Also, I realized while rewatching this that a disproportionate amount of my video game memories are linked to Square Enix, the evil geniuses.
This commercial for Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue always upset me when I was younger. Wouldn't being crushed in a bus hurt all of those Pokemon? It did not seem very humane, and I like to think that after trying to be crushed by that bus driver, Pikachu introduced that bus driver to Thunderbolt.
While this commercial for the Playstation 3 upsets me as an adult. Really, what the hell, Sony?
Now, I've never seen or heard of this game before today, but I couldn't help myself. That guy is just tasty. I'll play a fitness game with him any day of the week.
