3DS Release Day: Your Thoughts

Well the day that some of us have been waiting for is finally here; the 3DS is on North American store shelves, and presumably flying off them. Europe has had it for a couple days now, and Japan about a month. So for those of you who've already gotten out of line and raced back home, what do you think? Are your eyes adjusting to the new dimension, have you had a good time with any of the launch titles yet, or are you still just charging it in its dock?

I'd love to be able to share the joy, but even though tracking shows my system was delivered to my office at about 9:55 this morning, there's no sign of it here. While I quietly panic, waiting for the delivery driver to actually check in with anyone, feel free to taunt me with stories of 3D targets and floating faces in the comments.

Got mine this morning, but shirked buying any games because they're all just crap right now and I'm short on money anyway. What's built into the 3DS is entertaining enough, but I find myself turning off the 3D already. 4 hours into owning it and I'm already thinking I shouldn't have spent the money until a killer game comes out.

So far, I'm enjoying both Nintendogs and Lego Star Wars III. The AR games are fun, but I haven't fully explored those yet.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned previously, but if you do a system update on your 3DS, then you will have access to the 3D video for OK Go's "White Knuckles," which is a great song with a great video. I had seen it in 3D at one of their concerts, but the no-glasses thing really does make a world of difference.

oh, I'm really sorry about your problems with the delivery service, I hope you receive your 3DS soon! I will get mine on Tuesday (I hope# so I'm suffering in silence too XD. I'm really excited about this console but I have to say I don't understand why so many people complain about the initial games. I think there are pretty good...
-If you like Sports you have Madden and Pro Evolution.
-If you like platforms you have Rayman 3D which is a remake of Rayman The Great Escape (excellent game)
-Racing games: Ridge Racer and Asphalt 3D
-Fighting games: Super Street Fighter IV
-Adventure/Action: Lego Star Wars and Samurai Warriors
-Just fun: Super Monkey Ball, Nintendogs and Pilotwings Resort
-Sims 3
-Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars

I'm not saying that all this games are excellent but I don't remember having so many decent titles on the first day of launch of any console in the last few years.

I am a bit disappointed that the 3D does not really work for me - I either focus on the left or right eye and so I only get two different views - they don't mix up. So I mostly just turned 3D off.

I do like the new analog stick and the slight technical update on the device, though and had quite some fun with the AR Games, Face Raiders, Ridge Racer and Monkey Ball.

@ Pauwow. To clarify about the complaints. All the "good" games you mention up there are either ports or rehashes without enough new content to make them worth playing. Sure, if you've never played rayman 2 and like 3D platformers, then i guess I would recommend the newest version. But what a lot of people want is a brand new game directed at core gamers.

Pilot Wings is the closest thing, and it is getting average reviews. I played the demo which feels like Wii sports: air edition, and probably wouldn't keep my interest for more than a couple hours.

Worse still, some of the games are inferior to their console counterparts like SSF4 which I can't even conceive of a fighting game fan wanting, due to the static backgrounds, vastly inferior controls, and presumably worse online play (I'm guessing solely off nintnedo's track record with that last one).

I'm not saying YOU can't enjoy the 3DS, but it is really easy to understand why a lot of people are waiting.

I'm going to hold off until there are some decent games. So far, there's nothing that is worthy of my money. I'm not going to buy it just to experience the 3D. If I do that, I'll end up having fun for an hour and then shelving it for a year. Gonna wait for some good Mario games or something.

I got mine and have spent the last several hours shooting things and fishing in my bedroom. As far as games go, I'm happy to wait for something I really want. My only complaint is that regular DS games look kinda terrible on it :s

I've been playing the AR thingys and SSFVI, both really fun but i really wish I was playing zelda :/

Is the battery life as bad as they say?

Unfortunately yes. I got ~3 hours of intermittent gameplay in before the battery light started indicating I needed to charge the system.

@ Mad Mage:
I agree with you regarding ports but I have to say in my personal opinion the 1st day of the 3DS still better than the 1st day of the ps3, psp, 360, Wii or DS (and I like/own all these consoles but first half year was mediocre). I wanted Ocarina of time on the first day but I'm happy with having Zelda and StarFox in the first year.
Rearding SSFIV I have to disagree, I think the game is amazing, collecting figurine is really addictive and the 3D perspective is really cool. I don't care that much the static backgrounds. I think the controls are good and I like to have the touch screen option because is the only way that I can play in the car or in the subway. About the online I can't tell because I didn't try it yet. Anyway as you say is just a matter of a personal point of view, I don't think there is right or wrong answer.
I'm also excited about the Nintendo eStore because I can't wait to play GameBoy classics on this portable; I'm just wondering what price tag Nintendo is going to put on them...

I've decided to wait on the system, myself. It doesn't have any launch titles that appeal to me, so I'm going to hold off until it does (Starfox more than likely, or one of the Resident Evil games coming for it).
I do really want one, I just can't justify it when there are no "must have" titles on it yet.

Picked up the 3ds at gamestop this morning without a prob. No preorder. Have to say that I was blown away by how amazing the 3d was. Lego Star Wars is the title I went with and I am hooked!!

Ridge Racer is amazing, definitely the best launch title in my opinion. Pilotwings is awesome, and Bust-A-Move was really well done as well. Super Monkey Ball is a bit of a letdown, the series never recovered back to the greatness of the first 2 games. SSFIV is a piece of shit as we already know from the console release, but I'm considering picking up Rayman to see how that played out.

Am lovin' the system and Pilotwings so far - I was especially lucky that as a UKer my pre-order was delivered to me a day early [Thursday]! :D

The upscale of DS games is also great. Not nearly as bad as some places have fussed about.

Can't wait for Kid Icarus and Paper Mario down the line...

So I have Bust a Move, Samurai Warriors and Pilotwings. Bust is fun, probably one of the best iterations, but the 3D is obviously meh. Samurai Warriors is fun but the 3D effects feel somewhat subtle a lot of the time. Pilotwings really shows off the 3D, it looks incredible.

It really helps to do as the instruction book says... start the 3D slider low and bump it up as your eyes adjust. The effect looks much more solid and really pops out at you when you get there.

So, I'll admit to being slightly drunk from my saturday night when I picked mine up at the midnight release. Seeing the glasses-free 3D effect for the first time was so amazing, that I could not stop giggling. It's very comfortable on my eyes and I don't have to take breaks.

The software that comes on the system is fun. Face Raiders is a blast. I'm just sad that the game selection isn't the best. I got SSFIV and am already regretting it.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
