Free Realms Hits PSN

Sony Online Entertainment's free-to-play MMO Free Realms has made the leap from PC/Mac and onto the PlayStation 3. You can now download the game directly from the PlayStation Store and adventure to your heart's content.

"SOE has set the standard for MMOs on the console with two incredibly successful, innovative and exciting new massive online game worlds for the PlayStation®3 system- first with DC Universe Online and now Free Realms," said John Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment. "Our games extend the current lifecycle of the console with the added value offer of bringing tens of thousands of people together, in a game world, to socialize at community events, compete in combat activities and engage in a diversity of gameplay experiences, for years to come."

You can use voice chat in the PS3 version, which is cool, and also earn Trophies. I like the idea of a free MMO I can play on my PS3, but I'm guessing it's probably pretty limited unless you pay the monthly fee. I mean, there's 15 jobs and 30,000 clothing combinations, but if you're playing for free, it's probably just 100 clothing combinations. All the jobs are accessible, but you can only advance through level 4. If you pay, you can go up to level 20. Although 800 quests for free isn't bad, and paying adds another 400. You can pay $4.99 a month, $12.99 for three months, $24.50 for six months and $29.99 a year. Or go for $34.99 for a lifetime membership, which will be good for as long as SOE is supporting the game.

I don't play MMOs because of the extra monthly fee, but maybe if it didn't cost anything up front it might not be as bad? Or maybe it'll be fun just playing it a little for free? I don't know... I kind of want a little pink winged pony... Should I fire up my PS3 and take the plunge? Help me out here, people!

It's free to try it so might as well. Not really doing any harm there. :P

I have been playing it since yesterday evening and I kind of like it. Not an MMO person really but thought I would try it. It is cute. Seems like it could be fun. I'm already up to level 4 in one job and I just don't know how I feel about it. Nor have I got voice chat to work. I feel a tad overwhelmed. I don't really know what to do in it. They really should add a beginners tutorial. I am going to keep playing and decide whether or not to subscribe based on if I am having tons of fun.

I'm enjoying it. High monthly fees turn me off with most MMOs, but it's the initial $50-$60 price tag to experiment with a game that I may only enjoy for a few months that really gets me. Free Realms doesn't have that, and its monthly prices should be an example to all other MMOs.

Keep in mind, though. Member or not, you still have to pay extra real money if you want certain mounts, pets, and other things. They only become accessible as a member.

I was playing this when it was first released and I have to say, I was enjoying it a lot to a point when they made it heavily dependant on the monthly fee. Back then the leves weren't locked (as far as I remember) but a big (and I mean BIG) chunk of the game was locked out for you unless you paid for it.Much more than you'd expect from a f2p mmo.

It takes a lot for me to 'just quit' playing a game I really like but some of their business moves, as well as really awful communication on the company's side on the forums pretty much ended in huge disappointment and my only rage-quit to date.

I will say though, $34.99 for a lifetime subscription doesn't sound like much (don't remember if the price was the same back then), but can't see myself picking it up again due to a very bitter taste I still have, thanks to SOE.
