UPDATE: Nintendo Readies Launch Of 3DS

bestbuy-store-1531.jpg

Nintendo's 3DS is launching in the US on Sunday, March 27, although many stores around the country will be putting it on sale as soon as the clock strikes midnight on Saturday. As soon as I heard the news, I told you what Nintendo's plans were for their official New York City launch. I only had a date and location, but now I've got a few more details about it.

The event will be held at the Best Buy in Union Square, and starts at 9pm. There will be hands-on 3DS demo stations, food, music and giveaways (while supplies last). The excitement will build until midnight, at which point, the system will go on sale and everyone will finally get their hands on it. Although I have to wonder how you're supposed to enjoy the demos and food while you're in line!

Oh, and while the official press release didn't say so, I was told by a Nintendo rep that NoA President Reggie Fils-Aime will be there for the official NYC launch event, working the crowd up into a frenzy. Of course, if you don't live near Manhattan, other Best Buys will also be holding their own 3DS launch events. Just click here for details to find one near you. And I'd wager other shops are also going to be staying open past midnight on Saturday. Enjoy!

UPDATE: For whatever reason, Nintendo sent out some more information regarding the official New York City launch, so here's the extras:

First, the first 300 people to purchase the system at Best Buy starting at midnight will receive a special carrying case.

But also, starting at noon, everyone can head across the street from Best Buy to gather in Union Square Park where they can sample the 3DS, enjoy music and other activities. Playable demos will include nintendogs + cats, Pilotwings Resort, Steel Diver, Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition, Madden NFL Football, LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars and Asphalt 3D. The park event will run from noon until 8pm, and the launch event inside Best Buy will start at 9pm.

Oh, and the band playing in Best Buy will be the HOTcakes, who I've never heard of, but the press release claims are "one of New York City's hottest bands." We'll see!

I had a chance to try the 3DS today at Best Buy. The graphics are fantastic (at least on Pilotwings) and the hardware seems rock solid, I was very impressed. However, when I buy mine I think I'll be superglueing the 3D slider in the OFF position. It took less than a second for my eyes to stop focusing properly, and one of them tried moving independently of the other, and all I saw on the screen was the same image, only doubled.
I'm pretty sure that more than 5 minutes of that would cause me actual physical pain.
So, yeah, I'm very excited for the system, but I'll be passing on the 3D.

Did you have the slider all the way at the top? I find that with very deep 3D games like Pilotwings, it's better to set it just below top because sometimes you lose focus. Other games, though, it's not really an issue.

I tried it on all settings, and the only time it didn't cause my eyes to freak out was when it was so low it might as well have been off. My eyes just do not like the processes they use for 3D. I get severe headaches if I try to watch a movie in 3D, and was hoping the 3DS would be different because of the lack of glasses.
It's just as well, in movies I find 3D annoying and gimmicky anyway, so I don't feel I'm missing anything by watching them in 2D.
