Update: one of our commenters had a question about the "donation page" that shows when you confirm your signature. To avoid confusion, this is a feature of their site that cannot be disabled, and donating in no way benefits myself or Gay Gamer -- it is something for their site. To sign without pledging a donation, just click the link below the "explanation," on the left side of the page.
Vorpal Bunny wrote a post over the weekend about a rather curious petition, started by an (allegedly) indignant gay gamer who not only lambasted BioWare's David Gaider for "stereotyping gays" in Dragon Age II -- the writer also criticized the game for "creating the worst writing in characters, plot and everything else in DA2," which doesn't sound the least bit unhinged -- but went so far as to call for him to be fired. The nature of the petition does positively scream "Hi, I'm a troll," but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that he's simply a "concerned" gay citizen-gamer. Still, it's a poor reflection on the, shall we say, more level-headed gay (and gay-friendly) community, and as such I believe it warrants a show of solidarity and support for the fine folks at BioWare. Thus, I have taken the liberty of starting my own petition, measured in its tone, which can be accessed at the following link.
I'm sure I'll justifiably get a bit of flak for "feeding the troll," but the main thrust is not a direct counter-petition per se; mainly it's a way of thanking Gaider & Co. for helping to legitimize gay subject matter in video games. It may seem unnecessary -- the petitioner's rather lofty target of 100,000 signatures no sign of being reached before the cities of man are razed by divine fire -- but the fact is that this rather silly call for David Gaider's ouster has gained a bit of coverage (though as I scour the internet, I see that Gay Gamer's support for Mr. Gaider has garnered some coverage as well), as well a a couple hundred signatures. Thus, I feel compelled to do my bit to express some support for him. Call it Minnesota Nice gone horribly awry, but I believe it's a worthwhile undertaking, and it takes but a brief moment of your time. BioWare has already received much support from the site (and duly so), but it's nice for those of us on Team Gaider to have it down in writing -- even if said writing takes the form of a collection of electronic signatures in the belly of some godless machine.
So sign the petition, should you feel so inclined, and spread it along to your friends, whether GLBT or gay friendly. It may not be as adorable as a basket full of kittens -- as an aside, I place the full weight of my support behind the "Give Anders kittens" campaign -- but it's the next best thing, save for a basket full of puppies.
