To celebrate Sonic the Hedgehog's 20th anniversary, Sega released a new trailer hinting at their upcoming game Sonic Generations. And for longtime Sonic fans, it's a pretty fantastic hint: the return of chubby Sonic! Oh, sure, I could call him "classic Sonic" or something, but I find that the easiest distinction between the little pudge ball next to his Atkins diet incarnation.
Two items of interest stick out to me from this trailer. First, the fact that both chubby and svelte Sonic are running together is consistent with Sega's previous announcement of a game comprised of remade levels from various Sonic games. It's actually a little amusing that chubby Sonic is taking the lead, perhaps a nod to those who complain that the newer games aren't as fast as Sonic was on the Genesis. But also of note is the trailer's ending, indicating that the game will appear only on XBLA and PSN later in 2011. The absence of a WiiWare logo given the success Sonic has had on Nintendo's system over the years.
The trailer itself is currently exclusive to Sega's Facebook page, so head over there to see chubby Sonic in action for the first time in 14 years.
