Mass Effect Getting The Anime Treatment Next Year
Fans of Commander Shepard, in all his/her sci-fi glory, have already had a field day with the multiple books and graphic novels based in the universe of Mass Effect fleshing out Shepard's journey to save humanity and/or all the races in the galaxy. Now, EA have announced that there will also be an anime movie within the universe of mass relays and reapers, due out in summer of 2012.
It's not the first time EA's extended their multimedia blitz into the realm of Japanimation, either. Both Dead Space and Dante's Inferno had OAVs released near their launch windows to build interest and grab some tie-in dollars. But if you weren't a fan of those projects, take heart: they were produced by studio Film Roman, with some other credits, while the Mass Effect one will come out of T.O. Entertainment, who've been doing this anime thing since 2007 and have a good history of titles. They're also the same company EA tagged for an anime based on Dragon Age, which will come out this year.
One thing's for sure about this trend of fleshing out a game universe via other media: it's likely to interest gamers who weren't previously interested in anime as well as anime fans who couldn't care less about a particular Western game. And we could all use a bit more stuff to buy!
Now I'll just have to keep my hopes up that the DVD menu will have an option to replace the default Shepard with a badass FemShep...

As long as they get the original voice actors from the games. NO ONE can replace Seth Green as Joker.
I personally hope the movie doesn't feature Shepard at all so they don't try and lock down Mr. Bald Idiot as the canon Shepard. v_V; The comics have done quite well avoiding featuring Shepard or referring to Shep with certain pronouns.
