New Teaser For Silent Hill: Downpour (Video)

Proving that I am a masochist of the highest order, I find my little ears perking up whenever I catch a snippet about Silent Hill: Downpour, in spite of the fact that it will no doubt make me a very, very sad man. The Silent Hill facebook page recently hit 500,000 "likes," and as a show of gratitude, the folks over at Vatra decided to give us a preview of the game's E3 demo -- well, technically it's a preview. Featuring almost twenty seconds of in-game action -- highlights include the official Silent Hill Slip'n'Slide, as well as some blood-pumping, chair-based combat -- the "teaser lite" may come across as just a tad disappointing. Nonetheless, for those who have been craving some new Silent Hill media, it's marginally better than nothing. I have rather low expectations for Downpour -- since the disbandment of Team Silent, I can't help that the series has lost much of its core appeal -- but as Silent Hill is one of my favorite series I'll most likely give it a rental. Shattered Memories was surprisingly enjoyable, owing in no small part to Climax Studios's willingness to cast aside the established traditions of the Silent Hill franchise, rather than producing a second-rate facsimile. Ideally I'd love to see developers for subsequent Silent Hill game, including Vatra, follow suit; creating a game that, while retaining the themes of the original, introduces some fresh elements that will to shy away from the argument that Silent Hill need to be given the Old Yeller treatment, if only for the sake of its legacy.

I'm getting an "Alan Wake" vibe coming from this.... And that it's not a bad thing for me...

I really wanted them to end Silent Hill on the interesting note that was "Shattered Memoires".

Chair based combat reminds me of Alone in the Dark on 360. And I'll say that I'm one of the 2 people that actually appreciated a lot of what that game did. If they kind of go in a tighter direction but borrow a few of the more interactive aspects from that, combined with a lot of the exploration elements in Shattered Memories, they could have a really interesting game on their hands.

The idea of using found objects for combat is an interesting one... It was something that they tried in Origins, but didn't quite pull it off. I'm fine with suspension of disbelief, but the idea that Travis was running around the town with a safe next to his drip stand (in those comically-deep pockets) came across as more than a bit absurd. I like the idea of having the player rely on what scant, improvised weapons are at his disposal... Seems like a good way to increase the tension of the gameplay.
