Resident Evil: The Mercenaries "Roll Call" Trailer

Oh yes, another Resident Evil: The Mercenaries trailer -- this time with thrills, chills (well, not so much in the way of chills) and a menacing-looking man named "Hunk." I'm sure he's an absolute dreamboat under that gas mask. For those who haven't been following news of the forthcoming RE title, the video features a brief, but quite concise rundown of the cast, all delivered in a rather slick style that makes it an enjoyable minute and twenty-three seconds.

Despite not caring too much for the earlier Resident Evil games -- incidentally, I find myself unintentionally thrown into the Silent Hill camp (I hate this fanboy nonsense with a fury that can rend worlds in twain) on account of the fact that I have a cat named Alessa -- I've thoroughly enjoyed the more action-oriented gameplay that began with Resident Evil 4. At the end of the day, sometimes a gent wants to sit down, crack an imaginary beer, and blast through zombie after zombie until stain of retail is thoroughly washed from his soul. The franchise has admirably facilitated this process, and for that they have my gratitude -- and just in case anyone would dare accuse me of injecting my thanks with sarcasm, I tell you in perfect sincerity that Resident Evil is one of the reasons I am giving serious though to saving up my pennies for a 3DS.

Hmm...while I'm usually not the first person to point this out, I must say I'm a little surprised at the lack of, shall we say, diversity in the cast of heroes. I mean, with that many "Mercenaries", you think you'd have at slightly broader palette, no?

Where the hell is Leon?! *sadface* ;_;

I'm sure there will be downloadable characters as Nintendo makes it's way into being a soul sucking money grubber with the help of notoriously greedy Capcom.

I'm completely disinterested in this game. It's just a minigame. There's no story. IMO, it should have just been tacked onto a real Resident Evil game as a bonus.

They'll get my money once they bring Resident Evil back to what it used to be in RE1 through RE3. Survival horror.

Yeah, motodog? Completely unfortunate implications there. Sheva out of the office that day? It does seem as though, aside from from Resident Evil 5's African characters the entire show seems like a caucasio-fest. Now with non-caucasian zombies! Awkward.

@Mikey: There are those of us who really enjoy the Mercenaries mini-games, and having a full fleshed-out game about it with the whole STARS team in it is very interesting, especially since it's on a handheld (with very few interesting games for it right now). Should be a lot of fun pulling it out for a quick game now and then, plus there's apparently tons to complete and unlock.

@Motodog: Very true, all the characters are white. Though keep in mind most of them were created in the very first RE game, which came out ages ago. Japanese people weren't concerned with keeping the team of American agents racially balanced (even nowadays they don't really think about it). Sheva and Josh were in RE5's mercs, it's a shame they didn't make the cut in this one. Though Capcom will make DLC if there's enough demand for it, so here's hoping for Leon, Ada, Sheva and Josh as DLC.

I was hoping for a Leon and Ada appearance, but I guess they won't be making it this time. Well, at least Krauser's there, he was another favorite character of mine. Was the release date ever comfirmed for this game?

As a RE fan since the 90's, if it wasn't for Claire's pseudo return (as she’s sadly forever overshadowed by her counterpart Leon# I probably wouldn't be interested in this game. Reason why? Like many pointed out, no Sheva. RE mercenaries really came alive with RE5 when everyone could team up and play online. Sheva WAS RE5, and I find it pretty lame that Capcom can feature all the maps that took place in Africa but leave out the one playable African protagonist of the entire series. I call BS on that. They can place three of the series’ antagonist in this game, but the one unique heroine of the series wasn’t even invited to the party when most of it is taking place on her own turf. Talk about turning a blind eye to the local color. Sheva should’ve been a given, hands down., but instead it appears some kind of fan service #as the fan boys will drool for Hunk, Wesker, and Krauser) took her out the roster, which worries me about her place in future titles. Ada, as the lone Asian-American character, should’ve been in this too. These two women/characters are too amazing to be seen as sidekick fodder to the likes of America’s heroes Leon and Chris.

I have to agree -- the only reason I am interested in this game is Claire's return to action. Code Veronica made Claire an action heroine for me, and I'm still waiting for her to get a 'super matrix' Leon Kennedy game treatment. And not a regression of 'you're a healer, being a soldier isn't for you' RE: Degeneration Claire 'What would Leon do????' Redfield. Ugh.

No Sheva does suck, it's a shame she didn't get a deserved places as opposed to HUNK getting in, even Krauser. She isn't the only african playable character in the series, Josh and Jill had their own little adventure and he's seriously black. But yeah, Sheva, Leon and Ada definitely should have gotten in. But again, there is the possibility of DLC. I can only hope this will be the game where Jill, Claire, Rebecca, Sheva and Ada are all playable, as they're all great heroines. I've never really understood the appeal of characters like Chris and Krauser (other than to people who like muscly guys, obviously =P). It really bugs me that Chris replaced Jill in MvC3, and then she got added but as Wesker's skin-tight outfitted puppet. What a spit in the face to her character. I think Jill Valentine is probably a more recognizable icon of Resident Evil than Chris Redfield anyway.
