Video: Wootini's Video Podcast #19

Well, due to my utter lack of willpower in the face of a $20-off sale, I have a new game to talk about this week. Thing is, I haven't actually started playing it yet. So there's not a whole lot to say! But I do have some opinions on the Hulu Plus trial that I checked out last week, and some general thoughts about waving your arms around like a fool to control both that and Netflix with your Kinect! All that and more in this week's edition!

Don't worry, no spoilers in this write up. Just a few comments about Portal 2.

I beat single player in about 10 hours. That includes unlocking all single player achievements & taking my time in each test chamber to enjoy the surroundings & witty narration.

You should definitely play/beat single player mode before going into co-op. For both story & gameplay mechanic reasons. The storyline of co-op is a direct continuation/sequel to single player mode. I think giving players the choice to play/beat co-op before even shooting a single portal in single player mode is a big oversight on Valves part.(especially when you consider the ending/last chamber of co-op, which totally kills the story of single player) I would have made it so co-op was unlocked as a result of beating single player. Which makes more sense in the gameplay mechanics side of things as well. Single player slowly introduces new elements. Co-op brings in new elements with less of a 'here is how this works' approach.

My only quibble with the game is that it was obviously (as Valve clearly stated in several interviews) catered to the console. Portal 2 does not have a single test chamber that requires quick reflexes of mid-air-portal-shooting-acrobatics. With good reason. Trying to twist your body around while shooting a portal with ninja-esque speed & precision, with two joysticks is just not going to happen. It was these types of test chambers from Portal 1 that put a big stupid grin on my face & made my stomach turn a little as I recover from brief moments of vertigo. When a game is about portals, this sensation is a requirement.

Because speed/precision takes a back seat on the console, Portal 2 test chambers are more methodical. You can stand in one spot & assess the entire chamber & figure out the solution before you shoot your first portal. Which is fine, but because I played this on my Mac, I was a bit bored during the long string of chambers. It needed more adrenaline.

In the end, playing Portal 2 just made me miss the first title even more.

Sidenote/rant... I am a little bothered that the only real original content Valve created for this series is the story. Portal is just a remake/successor to Narbacular Drop & the new elements of Portal 2 are from Tag: The Power of Paint. I don't know why it bothers me. But to release a game that is made up of bought properties & for the gameplay to be so short & to charge $60 for it... feels a bit crooked.

There is certainly something wrong in videogameland. I just don't feel the emotional connection I did to games that now sport almost photorealistic graphics than I did with the short pudgy 16 bit characters of FF VI.

I agree with you Wootini, I think a game should give you more hours for 40-60 bucks. Also, regarding the Kinect controls on Netflix, if while you are watching a movie you say Xbox and wait a few seconds it will show you more options, like forward or next among others. I know is kind of obvious but I actually I discovered by accident the other day. XD
As a hardcore PSN User (I'm lvl 15) I'm worried about the PSN. Not just because I have PS+ and DC Universe Online because I honestly think that the damage suffered is way bigger than what Sony says. Meaning, first was just PSN with no credit cards info stolen, then was also some SOE accounts with some CC info, then they said around the 3rd the PSN will be ready, then they said that they were "in the final stages of testing", now they ares saying that it will be a few more days... I understand they need time but there is something strange about how misleading is the information provided .
