Paramount was justifiably proud to show off a very early build of their upcoming Star Trek game for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. While the voices were just placeholders, the likenesses were well in place, and the general look of the game was spectacular. And it should be, as they got the actual plans from ILM to recreate every set from the movie digitally within the game.
Star Trek will take place in between the first of J.J. Abram's films and its sequel. They were going for co-op straight from the start, and the game will feel more like a Kirk/Spock buddy movie. And in keeping with the spirit of the new reboot of the franchise, they're keeping things light with some good one-liners to stop things from getting too serious. Not that there isn't some serious action going on!
The demo we were shown had Kirk and Spock unable to return from their shuttle to the Enterprise because of mines and force fields, so they had to use jet packs to fly to the ship themselves. Once there, a little bit of exploration of the hangar bay led to a wicked firefight. Weapons have two settings; Kirk's is stun/kill while Spock's is stasis/kill. You can also use your tricorder to scan the environment. Scanning the dead Red Shirts you come across in the halls changed the outcome of a later scene in the medlab. But you can also use your tricorder in combat, to activate shields, move forklifts to expose enemies, or short out consoles to injure nearby opponents.
The gameplay I saw got me really excited, and knowing that the script is from God of War's Marianne Krawczyk also bodes well. And while there will be both local split-screen and online drop-in/drop-out multiplayer, you can also play the game solo. Both Kirk and Spock's perspectives are playable separately. So it's like getting two games in one! (And I have no doubt that the interactions between Kirk and Spock throughout the game will give slash writers material for days!)
Oh, and following the presentation, we were shown one last little treat: a special phaser Move controller for the PS3 version! It looked pretty sweet!
