Lara Croft Doing What She Does Best: Lookin' Pretty

In case you hadn't heard, Lara Croft has a new home with Square-Enix and with it a complete franchise reboot, a new look, and a new origin. Sadly she won't be getting new gameplay as part of the deal. or any apparently.

At least not as far as one can tell watching this new trailer. A Square Enix trailer without gameplay!? stop the presses But boy does it look pretty! I dare say Lara's never looked better.

Those pearly whites. That perfect skin. That smart new hair-do. The ethnic ambiguity. Even drenched in sea water, covered in mud, and bleeding from head to toe Ms. Croft is looking pretty flawless these days. Hopefully the gameplay, whenever we get to see it, won't look too shabby by comparison.

The series reboot from developer Crystal Dynamics, titled simply Tomb Raider, will make its big debut at E3 next week and will see release Fall 2012.

Plenty of time to add some gameplay. Or at least to photoshop in some fake HUDs.

How many reboots has she had now, seriously?

As I think that's a fair indicator to close the doors on such an IP...

this would be her second reboot ... so not that many. There was original, then the reboot with legends and now this.

I think she is going strong and a new spin on a character is a good thing, if done well. Which this looks to be doing.

Wow, this trailer managed to interest me in a franchise I had absolutely no interest in ever. This looks lovely as hell and I hope the game is as fun as this trailer is compelling and gorgeous.

Looks fantastic, especially younger, stronger, grittier, prettier, realistically-proportioned Lara. Definitely looking out for this one. I hope Square Enix give it the same effort and quality as Deus Ex.

If it's Square Enix then you know the production values will be top notch. I'm excited as hell for this. And I love Lara's more androgynous look.

I love her new, slightly-skater girl physique, but her rebooted background story sounds like they're trying to appeal to hipsters.

"trying to appeal to hipsters"... hmmmm... because hipsters like teenage girls who survive ship wrecks? I don't get it.

First, I love Lara's face. It can look very pretty sometimes, and then very average at other times, depending on the angles. None of that overly done beauty queen look, with Angelina Jolie lips and sultry eyes and so forth. Coupled with her somewhat fit (wish she were more muscular/had more visible tone# and less boobtacular body, she comes across as a more realistic portrayal of a woman.

Something that other women could identify with, finally, as a heroine. Rather than a sex object purely for the male gaze.

That said, I am still really, really wary about how things are going so far with the media hype and this trailer. It seems that the emphasis is on Lara getting beaten, bloodied, tied up #like one screenshot showed previously#, and broken at every turn. If the game is supposed to be about Lara earning her survival stripes, then why do we only see her getting victimized? Where are her defiant and heroic moments? That her 'success' is in her simply surviving/getting away from threats #and having her clothes visibly get ripped on her body, as has been reported#? That her 'vulnerability is what makes her sexy' #also a line in interviews#? It does make me worry what kind of game this will turn out to be.

So, many potential good things over the previous Lara incarnation, but other things I am still cautious and wary about.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
