Catherine Teases With Demo (And Deluxe Edition)

If you're as intrigued by Atlus' upcoming action/adventure/puzzle game, Catherine, as I am, you'll probably be happy to know that you can get a little taste of the game via the demo now available on the PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE. (Right now, only to Xbox LIVE Gold members.)
The demo is a brief tour of the intro sequence that shows off the anime and in-game cutscenes as well as a nice bit of the storyline and some gameplay. Despite everything I've read about and reported on with this game, I still don't feel like I have a handle on what it's all about. So I'm totally going to download this tonight and give it a whirl. (I really wish I didn't have to go out to dinner because then I could play it all the sooner!)
Catherine is scheduled for release on July 26 for the PS3 and Xbox 360, and there's a special "Love Is Over" Deluxe Edition available for $79.99. That comes with the game, a "Stray Sheep" pizza box, a Catherine pillowcase, Vincent's pink polka dot boxers, and an "Empty Hearts" men's large T-shirt. (Check the images in the gallery below) And if you pre-order at a participating retailer, you can get the Catherine Sound Disc & Art Book as a free bonus regardless of whether you buy the regular or deluxe edition.

Wow, that demo actually made me want it even more. I thought the puzzle aspect felt kind of cheesy but after the tutorial it really picked up speed and got pretty complicated when you're on a time limit. Even on easy.
The animation looks pretty low quality in comparison to the polygon models, and I wish there were better transitions between the 2d and 3d worlds (Re-playing FFVIII. Those transitions were pretty awesome and cinematic even if those were both technically 3D). And I hope they have the Japanese audio only because the lack of lip syncing bothers me as an animator who loves lip syncing.
The Reply feature is really neat. I always enjoyed that aspect in these kinds of games. But yeah, preordered the deluxe edition immediately.
Okay, this game has been pretty intriguingly difficult to define since the first info dropped on it, but the demo does a pretty great job making the gameplay potential shine. The subconscious and dream/nightmare complexity of the plot...and the characters makes it pretty compelling. I'm way more likely to pick this up now.
