Having confirmed that my energy drink has not been spiked with Absinthe, I present what I can only assume is, in fact, the trailer for the Fallout DLC pack, Old World Blues. Done in an old-timey (true to the Fallout legacy) sci-fi/horror style, Old World Blues invites the player to visit "Big Mountain," the forthcoming addition to the world of odd that is Fallout. There is offbeat humor, a couple of interesting weapons and, most importantly, a character sporting a 'stache for the ages. I can only hope that this DLC pack will, in fact, be rife with as much camp humor as the trailer suggests, but if history is any teacher, we can undoubtedly expect quirkiness in the moderate to high range.
Despite being a self-proclaimed pretentious Fallout geek (I'm still mourning the loss of the "Van Buren Project"), I've been regularly impressed with the Fallout 3 universe. Yes, it may have lost my beloved isometric camera. No, it was not a purely turn-based affair. Still, with a bit of perspective, I'm grateful that my beloved Fallout was delivered by the Gods into the hands of people that, whether you care for their style or not, know how to make Western action-RPGs. Fallout 2 remains my favorite, but Bethesda and Obsidian's efforts have proven to be nothing if not faithful to the spirit of the series - as for spinning the formula, I very much prefer it to producing a cheap facsimile for the sake of a quick buck - and for that I applaud them.
So for those who, like myself, enjoy all things amusing and post-apocalyptic: Enjoy. Those terrified of arachnids and/or the looming robot uprising might want to give this one a pass.
Old World Blues is slated for release on July 19th.
