EVO 2011: Kayopolice is Hot, Adorable, Better at Street Fighter Than You...Oh, and Trans

If you're reading this site chances are you spent this past weekend in one of two ways: Enjoying Up Your Alley 2011 in San Francisco or enjoying EVO 2011 in Las Vegas.

DigitalLit and I happened to be at the former dressed in leathers doing things we can't talk about here and Kayo Satoh aka Kayopolice was at the latter dressed as Street Fighter's C. Viper playing (non-competitively), commentating, and generally just being adorable.

Who is Kayo Satoh you ask?

The twenty-two-year-old is known for her successful modeling career in Japan, her prowess as one of Japan's top Tekken and Street Fighter players, and for being quite the cosplay enthusiast. And also for how she was born: as a boy; a fact she unveiled in September 2010.

The competitive fighting game world might seem like a harsh place and while it in many ways can be it is also a subculture sub-subculture? that has ethnically diverse, female, homosexual, and transgendered (Ed. Note: Originally this read transgendered, and as Mittens points out in the comments, should have read transgender. We will endeavor to make sure such is used in the future.) transgender people as some of their most notable members.

More Kayo/EVO fun after the jump.

And standing around being adorable as C. Viper:

Great post! I really dig the....wait...what's happening to ME!?!?!? I'm becoming....

DICTION CURMUDGEON. And I bring you a style point regarding the use of "transgender in your article.

Please use "Transgender" and not "Transgendered". The past form of the mythical transgendering activity is not uncommon in modern parlance, but it is inaccurate. Here is a note from Wikipedia:

A transgender individual may have characteristics that are normally associated with a particular gender, identify elsewhere on the traditional gender continuum, or exist outside of it as "other", "agender", "Genderqueer", or "third gender".

You will still see people who should know better use the past participle of the verbed "Transgender". It's a civil rights point, though. We should avoid allowing anyone to suggest that Trangender is a choice or activity. Lasting equality comes from recognition of the immutable state--being neither of the accepted binary genders.

Hey, Mittens. I'll apologize for letting this get past my editorial eye.

As a reassurance, I have gone ahead and emailed our staff to make sure that we use transgender in the future (as well as a few other style points when discussing trans people).

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, and I will strike out the above transgendered and make the appropriate edits.

She is extremely adorable, and definitely a great trans heroine of mine - atleast in the gaming world. =]
She's defeated some of the world's greatest players.

Here she actually defeats Daigo Umehara, the world record holder for most successful player in major Street Fighter tournaments!

I play C. Viper in Marvel Vs Capcom 3 'cause of her (even though I keep accidentally using her gauge-using moves. DX). Go Kayo Satoh!

My god, she's just absolutely, utterly adorable.

Don't tell Kotaku that she's trans or you'll get in a big drawn out fight over e-mail with them like I did.

Hey Mittens!

Thanks so much for the heads up. I honestly did not know, and considering my own share of ignorance on the subject probably should have double checked first.

But now I know! And knowing is half the battle!

And thanks VorpalBunny ol' pal for editing this for me!
