Dead Island Coming To The Big Screen (For Real This Time)

So back in February we (and by "we" I mean "I") totally erroneously brought you that the film rights for Dead Island had already been secured. This was pretty big "news" because the game hadn't been released yet, and all most people knew of the title was it's now-famous teaser trailer that was released shortly beforehand. Well, as it turned out there was no deal and news about Dead Island's film rights dried up.

Now, it appears that Lionsgate has bought the film rights for Dead Island - for real - and that no deal was made last February because of confusion over who had the primary rights to sell the title. Ironically six months later, Sean Daniel of "The Mummy" fame - the producer linked to the title back in February - is again said to be the producer helming the project. According to the official press release:

Like the trailer that will serve as its primary creative inspiration, the film DEAD ISLAND will be an innovation of the zombie genre because of its focus on human emotion, family ties and non-linear storytelling. Said [Lionsgate co-COO and Motion Picture Group President Joe] Drake of the property's acquisition, "Like the hundreds of journalists and millions of fans who were so passionate and vocal about the Dead Island trailer, we too were awestruck."

Interestingly, this suggests that the money behind the film is more interested in capturing the feel of Axis Animation's trailer, and not so much that of the game itself. However, the press release does indicate that some elements of the game itself will be translated to the big screen - namely the premise of unlucky vacationers having to survive a zombie onslaught using only what they have on-hand.

The film currently has no writers, director, release date, or much of anything else yet, but we'll keep you updated as news becomes available.

I was just thinking how it would make an amazing movie.
You don't see much of the 4 MCs interacting, but what you do see really gives you a feel of the characters and their relationships.

Not sure about the guy from the Mummy movies though. The first one was a pretty good movie, but every single one after that was crap.
