Take A Look At Real-Life Leon S. Kennedy

johannurbresidentevil.jpg

That's right, folks. There's another Resident Evil movie coming. Apparently I'm a little behind on this one, because it starts filming in my back yard (more or less) on October 10. Resident Evil: Retribution 3D will be made by pretty much the same crew that's made the past Resident Evil movies, with the Redfields MIA this time because they were captured by Umbrella or some such. Mila Jovovich's Alice will - of course - be returning, along with Wesker, Jill Valentine, Carlos Olivera, and Barry, as will be director Paul W.S. Anderson. Given that this will be the fifth Resident Evil movie, and that they keep making pretty decent coin, the series is rapidly turning into one of the most successful video game screen adaptations, it would seem. Proof that zombies sell?

But who is that statuesque gentleman accompanying this article, you ask? Well, he is Estonian-American actor/model/genetic lottery winner Johann Urb, and he's going to be playing Leon S. Kennedy, probably the biggest character to not be ported from the games to the silver screen series thus far. GameInformer has a great side-by-side comparison of Mr. Urb and his video game counterpart sporting eerily similar, endearingly dorky hair-dos, but given the amount of attention that Chris Redfield gets around these parts, I figured a slightly more flattering picture was in order. Mr. Urb is perhaps best known for his role in Eastwick, though yours truly remembers him best as the Russian pilot from 2012 (yes, I watched 2012) who was criminally killed off for no good reason except that he was possibly better-looking than the special effects.

We will, of course, keep you updated about all the Resident Evil, Chris Redfield, Leon Kennedy, and other attractive-man-related news that we can.

I so hate when they make brunettes blonds.
I vastly prefered Leon in RE2 when he still had brown hair.
They periodically do the same with Iceman in the X-men comics.

BTW I always liked Leon at the very least as much as Chris. Both are very hot in diferent ways.

The nightmare that is the RE movie series continues on. It doesn't matter how many useless cardboard cut-outs with names taken from the games Anderson adds, he destroyed any hope for this series with the third movie. It's just sad that he thinks his movies are popular and high-quality because of how much money they make.
And I see Wesker is returning, despite being killed in the fourth movie. How terribly predictable. I have to wonder if Capcom has any say whatsoever in this film series, it's become a complete mess of CG-filled, slo-mo action, clich├ęs and bad fan fiction.
Ugh, I can't go on. Most Resident Evil fans already know how soul-sucking awful this series is. We just want it to end already. Please.

No, we don't.
It's a fun series and it's welcome to go on.
Though admittedly the series has never equaled the quality of the first movie (which I maintain was as good an adaptation of a game as the SH movie), the rest have been great as long as you're not looking for a 100% loyal remake.
Frankly that last one is where most of the overly-rigid fans stumble.
If I wanted the exact same experience, I would go play the games again.

I never played any of the resident evil games and I find the movies a great distraction, not that they linger in my mind for long, but I don't think they are that bad (for someone who isnt a fan of the game franchise)

Hellooooooo Nurse!

My first thought was "Hmmm shouldn't Leon be a little less chiseled?" My second thought was "Shut up brain!" I am now going to get caught up on this series, thanks Hal!

I love the RE movies. Milla rocks my world when she's kicking arse and taking no names. It is great having a female action heroine in a time where female action heroines on the big screen are severely lacking (again). I'm all for the ride, even if it is as ridiculous as the last movie.

I'm disappointed to hear that Claire and Chris will not be in this new movie, though? I was interested in seeing any Chris/Jill interaction (not that they have any pre-existing relationship in this franchise like they do in the games franchise).

As for Leon... I really never cared for his character, or the direction they took him in the games. But I will say that is Leon looked like Mr. Urb, I'd be more interested.

I can see I'm in the minority here, I won't argue with you, you're all free to your opinions. What I will say though, regarding Milla's character... I would be very happy having a kick-ass movie heroine, except the Alice character is an invincible Mary-Sue who constantly steals the spotlight from the game characters, specifically from perfectly awesome heroines like Jill and Claire, which the movies should have been about in the first place. She gets to fight Nemesis instead of Jill, kills the cerberus dogs when Jill's match fails to light her own gas trap, steals Claire's gun-drop trick from Code Veronica, pulls Claire's head down and finishes off the Executioner for her, and defeats Wesker while Claire and Chris are taken out of the picture (though they get to shoot his body afterwards. Which does nothing to stop him from coming back moments later). Of course Milla's husband makes these movies, so he's going to be writing these movies to make his wife look awesome.
What do we even know about Alice, other than she was a security officer turned activist? She also can't help but get naked in the first 3 movies numerous times, and was interrupted from doing so in the 4th.
Just because a character is female who kicks ass, does not mean she's a strong female character.

Oh, by the way, this is who I would have picked to play Leon. Saw him on Harper's Island:

Leon was never supposed to be a brunette. Both he and Claire's models were just so bad that their hair colors were both wrong.

As you could see in the cut-scenes for RE2, Leon was still a ginger though. This is because in early development he was originally going to be one, but they ended up giving him dark blond hair and Claire auburn hair as opposed to the blonde Elza Walker.

Besides, MOST RE characters are brunettes aside, do we really need douche-prince Leon to be one too? No.

Why don't you complain about the fact he has no consistent eye-color.

@BrookeTF: I will agree with your assessment. No argument. The Alice character is a Mary Sue and these movies focus on mindless action and cheap horror/thrills rather than arcing plotlines, character depth, and fleshing out the history of its characters.

I would not call Alice a strong lady or particularly good character (and I made sure to specifically phrase my previous post the way I did), but she is an action heroine.

I would like it if these movies did to the character- and world-building, waxing philosophical and getting to dramatic intricate plots as well as action slaughter and cool shade explosions... unfortunately, this is all I am offered. Milla doing action scenes in a movie is enough for me, as a fan of hers and a fan of seeing more action heroines on the big screen (since Hollywood and the game industry wrongly believe that making movies/games starring female protagonists *do not sell*). The market, too, is also big enough to have no-brainer action movies as well as deeper and more cerebral ones.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
