Patching The Sky(rim)

Elder_Scrolls_Skyrim_01.jpg

Despite my enthusiasm, I opted to postpone Skyrim until after Skyward Sword simply because Zelda is actually finishable, whereas I will never come near the end of an Elder Scrolls game. But with games like these, it's almost a good thing to wait, because by the time you get around to playing it, all the patches and updates are in so it plays like it should have upon release.

Today Bethesda has released the PS3 update for Skyrim, with the Xbox 360 and PC updates scheduled for Wednesday, November 30. It's mostly a bunch of random bug fixes, but there's a few major fixes that I know some of you are going to be happy to see. (Especially that Xbox 360 texture issue, since that's the version I put on my Christmas list!) Here's the whole list:

  • Improved occasional performance issues resulting from long term play (PlayStation 3)
  • Fixed issue where textures would not properly upgrade when installed to drive (Xbox 360)
  • Fixed crash on startup when audio is set to sample rate other than 44100Hz (PC)
  • Fixed issue where projectiles did not properly fade away
  • Fixed occasional issue where a guest would arrive to the player's wedding dead
  • Dragon corpses now clean up properly
  • Fixed rare issue where dragons would not attack
  • Fixed rare NPC sleeping animation bug
  • Fixed rare issue with dead corpses being cleared up prematurely
  • Skeleton Key will now work properly if player has no lockpicks in their inventory
  • Fixed rare issue with renaming enchanted weapons and armor
  • Fixed rare issue with dragons not properly giving souls after death
  • ESC button can now be used to exit menus (PC)
  • Fixed occasional mouse sensitivity issues (PC)
  • General functionality fixes related to remapping buttons and controls (PC)

Of course, Bethesda says they'll continue monitoring forums and blogs for more complaints, so they can keep fixing what's broken. And in an open world game like this, that's a very good thing, because random bugs can pop up when you least expect them! (Although I bet when I play, I'm going to be wishing for the bug where the dragons don't always attack!)

Thankfully they're fixing the key reassignment issues. Right now I can't have some buttons assigned to my mouse side buttons that I'm used to from Oblivion, at least not if I want to keep the other functions those buttons have in the menu screens. I wish they'd release a UI overhaul that makes the menus more mouse/keyboard friendly, it's obviously designed with a controller in mind and as such is rather clunky for me. It's been weird getting used to defaults in the game.

Patch ended up braking more things than fixing!
Also the Lag issue is still there, you can only play for a few more hours before it comes back, the game also crashes more when you install the patch.

Oh and magic resistance is gone, you can kill a freaking flame atronach with a fireball.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
