The rumor mill has churned up some new details today on the long suspected, but never confirmed, Sony take on the mascot brawling Super Smash Bros series. Amazing how it only took thirteen years for Sony to have the idea to copy Nintendo's smash hit series. And yes, that pun was completely necessary.
Like any good rumor, the details are shadowy and wholly unconfirmed, making speculation so much more fun. According to the Paul Gale Network, we can expect the codenamed Title Fight sometime in 2012. Players will battle through the usual party/brawl game tropes, like stages inspired by the character's home titles, an awkward mash-up of realism and cartoon heroes/villains, and enough super-special-awesome finishers to make friends throw controllers in rage. Points are scored by KOing opponents by either knocking them off the stage or dealing enough abuse in one blast to
kill overwhelm them, and then collecting the orbs that float out of their lifeless bodies. Matches are said to be three minutes long, but of course, the final product will almost certainly include numerous different battle styles gamers can ignore and just play stock matches instead.
As for the 20-ish character roster, the rumors have so far put up a handful of obvious names: Sweet Tooth, Nathan Drake, Kratos, Sly Cooper, and Jak/Daxter. Some less than obvious possiblities include Parappa the Rappa and the Fat Princess, whom I imagine to be akin to the Pokemon Trainer in Smash Bros Brawl and send out her interchangable forces to fight for her. In a refreshing change of pace, the game will rarely double up on characters from the same franchise and instead rely on cameos to mix up the fighter roster while still including everyone's favorites.
Of course, the game isn't even concretely confirmed yet, so who knows what the final product will resemble. Could a Sony brawler stand up to the king of mascot fighters, SSB? Won't it be kind of weird to include Sweet Tooth, a convicted serial killer, and have him duke it out with a cartoon fox? And will there be a Vita version? Hopefully Sony will reveal some details at the VGAs. Or at least, confirm that this game is real.
