I don't know about you, but my holiday wasn't that great because I came down with a terrible cold that stretched from Christmas to New Year's and still isn't quite gone yet. However, Nintendo seems to have enjoyed themselves, because the 3DS has somehow outsold the Wii!
Okay, no, not really. I mean, as far as installed user bases go, the Wii is going to be pretty hard to top. But according to recent sales data, Nintendo is reporting that the 3DS has sold more in its first nine months than the Wii did in the same time frame. All total, the Nintendo 3DS has sold over 4 million units. (There's 39 million Wiis out there and 51 million DSes of varying types, just for comparison's sake.)
The 3DS got off to a rough start, but the price drop helped significantly and reinvigorated interest in the handheld just in time for some AAA titles like Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 to hit the market. Sony's got some stiff competition ahead of them with the Vita, but that system already has the advantage of a better launch library to start with. The only issue I can see will be the price point. Sony can't afford to lower it to compete directly, at least not for a while. We'll see what happens in February!
(I know this is going to get everyone up in arms about my supposed bias again, but I'm just speculating. I, for one, welcome competition because it keeps things interesting. If one company takes over the business, there's no reason to innovate!)
