Pokemon Announcement Set For This Sunday

Pokemon Smash.jpg

For Pokemon fans, tonight will be a sleepless night rivaled only by Christmas Eve and the euphoria after catching a shiny Jigglypuff. Game Freak director Junichi Masuda has announced via the Game Freak blog that he will be revealing something on the Japanese show, Pokemon Smash, this Sunday.

On this coming Sunday, Februrary 26, 2012, from 7:30 A.M, I, Masuda, will be appearing on TV TOKYO's Show, "Pokémon Smash!"

I will be making a VERY important announcement, so be sure not to miss it!! Watch it live on TV!

And, for those of you who can't watch television on live, I will announce the same information right after the show via twitter!!

While the Pokemon franchise has piles of spinoffs and rereleases that could fill the spot, it seems most likely that Masuda will announce the third fifth generation game, presumably titled Pokemon Grey, to keep the streak of spring main series releases. Of course, it could also be information on the Pokemon/Nobunaga's Ambition or perhaps a follow-up to Pokemon: Battle Revolution to include fifth generation monsters, but that seems more unlikely.

Regardless, you can follow the twitter link to hear the news straight from Masuda himself this weekend or just wait for the inevitable wave of news stories sure to flood the internet. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to tend to my shiny Jigglypuff.

It's Pokémon Black/White 2. Yeah, the series is doomed.

Doomed? I think making a direct sequel (for the first time) instead of yet another reboot is a positive sign that Game Freak is willing to do something different.

One of the biggest criticisms of Pokemon is that every game is basically the same: you start out as a young boy/girl who is given their first pokemon by the local professor, and then goes out to take on the Pokemon League (foiling a plot along the way).

One of the things which made G/S/C special is that it was the only game so far to really acknowledge its predecessors - where you could face off against Blue and Red and you saw the remnants of Team Rocket.

If Black/White 2 is a proper sequel and revisits the heroes and villains of Black/White 1 - and the seeds of a more sophisticated story that were hinted at but never developed - then this could be the most daring and surprising Pokemon experience since R/G/B.
