PAX is upon us, bringing with it fun, frolic, video game news, and this mysterious new substance that scientists call "beer." It has also brought trailers, one of which is the Trion Worlds-Syfy collaboration, Defiance. As an MMO-FPS set 30 years in the future, the game revolves around your standard "alien menace" scenario, and the horrors it hath wrought upon a ruined humanity. Teams are assembled, guns are shot, and the comically-large teeth of said menace grins a devilish grin, in anticipation of its next kill.
As an interesting twist, the story of Defiance will be told through both a video game and television series. The show will be broadcast on the SyFy (intentional misspellings are not clever), and according to the Defiance site, "Because they exist in a single universe, the show and the game will influence each other and evolve together over time, with actions in both mediums driving the overall story of Defiance."
It's an interesting idea, assuming the show isn't a complete flop or, worse still, ends up being so dismal that one wishes to go out back behind the shed and give it it the Old Yeller treatment, lest it spread its sickness to an otherwise-solid video game. Still, I'm most fond of the FPS MMO concept. Despite being notoriety terribly at PVP first-person shooters (Counterstrike: Never Again), it's nice to see some deviation from the standard MMO mold.
