Gallery: Tomb Raider

For gamescom, Square Enix released another batch of screenshots for the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot. And while they're still looking just lovely, I'm still not crazy about playing a lead character who seems to spend the entire game being abused and struggling to survive. She always seems to look really messed up to me. So I'm starting to worry that this game might be too dark and violent for my tastes. Although they also only seem to be showing video and screens of this one section of the game, so hopefully there's others where Lara gets to be the awesome and cool heroine we fell in love with back in the day. I don't know... I guess I'll just have to wait until Tomb Raider comes out on March 5, 2013 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, and see what everyone else says first before I commit. But hey, enjoy the screenshots!

My concern so far is that it seems a little too realistic for Tomb Raider. The grittiness is fine, but where are the dinosaurs and supernatural enemies and such? That's part of the Tomb Raider experience.

Seriously, the levels of sexism and misogyny dripping from this game is offensive on so many levels. Not since Metroid: Other M has a female gaming icon been so thoroughly ruined and turned into yet another tired "woman that needs help/protection" cliche. I'll stick with the older TR games, thanks.

I pretty much disagree. Tomb Raider in the beginning was pretty dark and grim if you look back at it, T-Rex aside.

Crystal Dynamics want Lara to be taken seriously as a character. No matter what they did in their past three games, her 90's persona was firmly ingrained into gaming culture.

Before this reboot, what was the first thing always mentioned about Lara in any article? Her boobs. That is all she was for years. Walking boobs.

The gaming community as a whole, ALWAYS ripped into this series.

CD had no choice but to completely change things up.

All these scenes and pictures you guys have seen are only in the first hour of the game. She will become a badass again, but on a more realistic scale.

And she is hardly a "woman who needs protection" Shin Gallon. Thats pretty ignorant to say. Have you even seen the things she has overcome in just the first hour of the game? Its more than many women and men could handle. She also does that all on her own.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
