Video: Wootini's Video Podcast #80

So this week, I wanted to mention GaymerCon's Kickstarter for anyone watching my vidcasts and not actually visiting GayGamer.net where they'd see the article. But now that I'm actually posting this video to the site, they've already surpassed their goal! But they've still got until the end of the month to collect donations, and if they get enough, we might also get a concert or a celebrity guest of honor! From there, I move on to talk about my impressions of Tales of the Abyss, and my temptation to pick up a PlayStation Vita. Then I close out with a special treat that I forgot to include in last week's video, which is a really cool Zelda print on display at the Nintendo World Store!

For tails of the abyss as far as i know u cant realy control your team. u can switch to them and control them yourself but i think thats it. also your specials have to match a sertant color and when u do it its rewarding. also u unlock more skills like i ges u would call is a super special and u can unlock other stuff like moving around instead of just forward and back during battle.

I had the same problem with Tales of the Abyss combat! Here's how I got to learn to love it.

First, instead of playing on Manual control, I set the game to Auto.

Then I started to learn how to get a FoF charge. Basically, you have to use either a low-level fonic arte twice (e.g. Jade's Splash, used twice, will create a water FoF) or a high-level fonic arte once (e.g. Jade's Blessed Drops). Left to their own devices, the characters will cast any of their spells, so you'd rarely see a useable FoF pop up.

At this point, Jade and Anise were only using specific fonic artes to create FoFs. When a FoF opened up, I would select another character, switch to manual, then free-run them to the FoF. Then I would change back to Auto and command them to use a special attack that would be transformed in an FoF charge. For example, if Jade had created a blue FoF, I would run Tear into the field and have her use First Aid, which became Meditation.

Discovering the different fonic arte combos made the combat fun for me. Plus, I was constantly stopping combat to use the menu, which made it feel more like a turn-based JRPG to me.

I wasn't that interested in button-mashing so I don't really control Luke or Guy all that much, except to throw them in the way of enemies gunning for my spellcasters.

Oh my God, that sounds so complicated! :-)

I've hit a boss fight that's really hard, and I'm pretty sure I've leveled up enough and it's that I don't know how to do the combat properly and my attacking and blocking isn't going to be enough. I'm a little annoyed that the game doesn't come with much of a manual, sending you online to read combat strategies. And the game itself doesn't really teach you much as you go. I have all these gems and objects that you're obviously supposed to use to power up your characters, but having been given no instruction, I'm going to have to go online to find out what the heck I'm supposed to be doing with them. (Because clearly, I'm not using them to the best of their abilities!)
