Help Obscura Come Out On Top

comingoutontop.jpg

Well, it took me so long to get around to writing about this new Kickstarter project that it already reached its goal, then doubled it and just keeps climbing with still over a month to go. Obscura may be a woman, but she's creating a gay erotic dating sim game called Coming Out On Top. You play a college student who has just come out of the closet and must navigate the complicated dating world.

It's pretty much an interactive story where you make dialogue and story choices for your character that either helps or hurts his relationships with friends, teachers and potential love interests. But being an erotic dating sim, there's some raunch to it, too. I was actually surprised when the demo took a decidedly adult turn after some standard scenes. I'm not what you'd call a prude, but I was slightly taken aback by the scene, and the visuals were even censored in the demo! In the full version of the game, they won't be, but I almost wish that she would add an option where you could play a "softer" version that's less graphic. Wow, I do sound like a prude now!

You can check out the Kickstarter page for more details, and play the demo of Coming Out On Top at this page (available for Windows, Mac and Linux). There's going to be plenty more guys added in the final game that you can romance, but I don't care about them — I just like knowing that I can put the moves on my unbelievably hot "straight" roomie, Ian! (Seriously, play the demo and tell me he's not the best!) I'm actually intrigued by the demo enough to want to play the full game (a $10 pledge to the Kickstarter will get you one!). Some of the dialogue is a little flat and cliche, but overall, Coming Out On Top has personality, humor, and cute boys. What more could you ask for?

Well, at least on the page, she mentions that there will be a few other men of color (a black guy and an Asian guy), and some body diversity, though probably not too much. I wish she could program a bit more of a "choose your own character" designer, but I guess the additional work and programming would be tough...

It's asking a lot of a Kickstarter game, but seeing some real racial/body type/personality diversity would be really enjoyable. Replay value would be through the roof.

I was also surprised by how raunchy this got! Not a bad thing, but not the usual fare.
Also I was somewhat perturbed that if you initially play things cautious with your suitor, you lose points. Promiscuity is alive, well and being encouraged!
Oh, now I sound like a prude; seems to be catching.
An enjoyable demo though and I am looking forward to the full game. Fingers crossed that room mate Ian will switch side at some point (me thinks he will).

Oh hey--I just want to add that promiscuity actually will lose you points with certain guys. Flirting though is another thing entirely.

Oooh this reminds me of Leisure Suit Larry but with a hotter lead character.

Nothing wrong with a little sex scene- or multiple ones. I think it's nice ^^ It's super rare that gay men have quality games that target us. Keep up the good work Obscura! It's also really nice to see how in touch with your fans/critics/potential buyers- you are. The industry could take notes from your willingness to talk with people.

I'm not the one to shy from drawn porn, but I've yet to see a game of this type that's not just "blah blah blah and then suddenly I feel horny - sex scene time", this one included, at least that's the feeling I got from the demo. I do hope they manage to polish the writing & tie up the story some more, even thought, with such games, it's always only really there as an excuse to cue the sex. Why have graphic sex otherwise in these games, no? Nothing wrong with that :P but would be nice for once having characters who are developed a bit more in graphic adventures.

Also, the anticipation & not revealing all your cards in the first 5 minutes of the game will go farther, is what I personally think. When something is too accessible (i.e. drawn sex scenes) and becomes the focus point, it kind of loses the appeal (and sex, if anything, is easily accessible on internet as is).

You know Wootini, this actually isn't the only game with gay content on Kickstarter.

It's not solely gay, but it promises to be thoughtful about who is and isn't gay, and it'll be just one part of their personality. Also, I think the main character is a hunk.

"Obscura may be a woman, but she's creating a gay erotic dating sim game"

It's very odd how you say this as if it were a rare occurrence that heterosexual women are interested in gay men and their sexualities.

Oh, I know. I meant more that she's a woman, but she's writing a coming out story from a gay male perspective. To me, that's unusual.

@Ian, had a look at that Kickstarter, didn't see any gay content mentioned...
That isn't a problem, just curious where you read that :3

What a promising start! Obscura has really made the characters come alive in the demo, as short as it is. There's a whole lot of work to do in the game, though, but if it is finished, it's something I'd be willing to pay for.

I hope the final result will be more "gamey", with much more choices on where to go and who to talk to and what to say.

Oh, and Ian is to die for!

Holy amazeballs. I need to play more(and back it). I never realized how much I enjoyed dating sims til recently, with stuff like this and the amazing works of Christine Love.

Thanks for posting about this!

Too much "queue the sex"?!?!?! Tell me of one, ONE other full-length game (flash games don't count) IN THE HISTORY of video games that includes a genuine gay sex scene. You can't, because there aren't any.

I say bring on the ass-slapping-est, cock throbbing-est gay sex scenes she can throw at us. I'ts not that a porn video game can't be made, it's that no ones given it a real shot because god forbid video games have sex in them that isn't a simple cut-away. We are adults, we can handle it.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
