All rise! Capcom announced today that Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies will be available as a digital download on the Nintendo 3DS across Europe and North America this fall! I’ve got details, and a gallery of character art and screenshots after the jump!
Dual Destinies (previously announced as the subtitleless Ace Attorney 5) has the awesome Phoenix Wright returning to court after eight years. But the courtroom has been destroyed and the game begins with Phoenix and the team at Wright Anything Agency to find out what happened. You’ll face off in court against Gaspen Payne, the younger brother of previous nemesis Winston Payne. (God, I love those names!)
I was concerned about how Phoenix Wright would make the jump from 2D sprites to 3D graphics, but judging from the trailer, there was really no reason to worry. The characters and the courtroom look fantastic. And I’m really looking forward to investigating 3D crime scenes, too. Being able to change viewpoints and zoom in and out might make finding the clues a little more challenging. Another new character is Athena Cykes, who has the abililty to psychoanalyze witnesses to add a new gameplay element where you can compare the witness’ mood to their statement to find a contradiction between the two. (And yeah, that’s Apollo Justice in the character art below… I’m sure Gumshoe will be back as well if that’s more your type, but no art on him yet!)
I love this series, and I’m really excited to be able to play a new entry. I am hoping that if they’re going to tie into the previous games at all, they either offer up a pretty solid “Previously on Phoenix Wright” at the beginning, or just throw in enough exposition so I know what they’re talking about. It’s been a really long time since I’ve played the earlier games! But the characters have retained their personalities with the jump to 3D graphics very nicely, and I’m so looking foward to Phoenix yelling “Objection!” and thrusting his finger right out of my 3DS screen and into my face!
