Rockstar Games released the first gameplay trailer for the forthcoming Grand Theft Auto V, with another look at the three protagonists, a first look at character switching, and a glance at some of the minigames that will be available. It’s worth it for Trevor’s little intro scene alone. Take a look:
What really stood out to me: I can play tennis and I can invest my hard-earned/stolen money in what is sure to be a hilarious version of the stock market. Oh, and yoga. One of the reasons I go back to this franchise again and against is that it’s funny. I’m not in it for the cool cars or the prostitute beatings, I’m in it for the oftentimes subversive, rarely subtle commentary on modern American culture. I assume I’ll inevitably be able to beat my tennis partner to death if I feel like it, but I’m also hoping there will be some great dialogue if I choose to take Franklin, the black protagonist, to the country club for a match.
In addition to the minigames, this trailer showcased a lot of what we’ve come to expect from the GTA series: so-so animation, cool vehicles, cooler guns, and lots of violence. No look at the multiplayer gameplay, but that’s allegedly coming soon. Despite my disappointment that all three playable characters in this game are male, this trailer finally got me excited for the game.
GTA V hits stores September 17th for the PS3 and Xbox 360.
