She will never turn her back on a friend. She is always there to defend. She’s the one on whom you can depend. She is the one named Sailor Moon.

It’s been over twenty years since the original Sailor Moon manga and anime series took the world by storm, birthing an entire anime genre as well as one of the single most recognizable nerd icons of all time: Sailor Moon herself. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone, gamer, otaku, or otherwise, that doesn’t recognize the schoolgirl uniform and the signature blonde pigtails.

The cultural icon is set to make her triumphant return, with her pals the Sailor Scouts in tow, later this year in Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal is a brand new adaptation of the original Sailor Moon manga series, rather than a remake of the first anime series, in honor of the franchise’s 20th anniversary. This long awaited revamp was originally announced in 2012 (the actual anniversary year, 2014 is technically year twenty-two but who’s counting?) and has had eager fans anxiously awaiting the return of the original magical girl ever since.

After numerous delays and not a single bit of promotional material to hold on to many began wondering if this series would ever see the light of day…or night, I guess. Moons and all.

Yesterday fans got their first taste of what the new series will look like via the above image, along with new information about its debut courtesy of the official Sailor Moon website.

The series will premiere in July, streaming worldwide via the NicoNico service.

Crystal’s synopsis is as follows, via Anime News Network:

“Usagi Tsukino is a second-year middle school girl who is a little clumsy and a crybaby, but she is full of energy. One day, she meets Luna, a black cat with a crescent moon on her forehead, and she transforms into Sailor Moon, a sailor-uniformed pretty guardian of love and justice! As a chosen guardian of justice, Usagi seems to have a mission to find the Illusionary Silver Crystal with the other guardians and to protect the princess.

Meanwhile, the queen of the Dark Kingdom, Queen Beryl, also sends minions to the town where Usagi lives to obtain the Illusionary Silver Crystal, which has immense power. This causes strange events to unfold….

Can Sailor Moon really find the Illusionary Silver Crystal with the other Sailor guardians, and protect the princess…!?”

A mysterious countdown accompanies all the new information, with only eight days left to go…

Hello! Im Matt from Europe. Ive been SM fan since 1997 (thats when its airs on TV in my country). Ive watch it at 3PM, right after school. News that I’ll be able to watch it after 17 years, in new form, its… Not a dream come true, its way, waaaay more and beyond imagination! Its unreal!
SM looks so good and mature! I think fan around may age, around 27 was afraid that new TV show will be too much, well… kids friendly! But its look like it’ll be OK! Thank God!
In my country Ive watch SM with lector – not dubbing! I am still, still in shock (after this 17 years) how English dubbing was sooooo baaad! I mean, lack of emotion, so shallow…. I was so lucky, to hear Usagi’s voice, and others, I wish that original cast will reunite once again!
